I've had XP Pro for about a day now (had 98SE) and I keep getting a message I've never seen before. I don't know if it's real or spam, so I'm hoping you guys will know.

another way to tell if its spam or not, is when it comes up "Right-Click" the messege, then goto "Properties", that is, if it has one, if not, its real, if it does, after you click the Properties, look at around the middle of the Properties, you should see if it has an "HTTP" address, it usually will, and its a pop-up.

Hopefully you didn't click on the "OK"button and paste that link to install the "updatepatch" .   Follow the link that cruze5 posted to disable the messenger service.

I've just been closing it, because I didn't know what it was.  I had a friend hook all of this up, including a router that I thought would make me secure. My Yahoo Toolbar/Popup Blocker has blocked 12 popups today so far.

The only "firewall" I've ever tried was Zone Alarm, and I couldn't get on the web until I deleted it. I had Norton Systemworks 2003 on the 98SE, but it caused some goofy stuff to happen so I'm not loading it on this new system.

Does having a router give me the protection I want/need?

Yes if you have high speed internet I would highly recomend a router.
1. Linksys
2. Netear
3. Dlink
I also recomend antivirus from:
nod32, commandondemand, kaspersky, f-prot, f-secure, avast, pandasoftware .....  download a trial version and purchase the one you like

spyware:
adaware
spybot search and destroy
spysubtract
spysweeper
ewido antitrojan
microsoft's antispyware

I guess tomorrow I'll go buy "Windows XP For Dummies" so I can read up on this stuff.

I've had people tell me SP2 will slow everything down and mess things up; Not true?

I'm not trying to be funny or difficult here by the way, I just don't know what I'm doing.

I wouldn't run XP without SP2 installed. Period.

Where do people come up with this stuff about SP2??  I install SP2 at least 10 times a day on customers computers... Its  very rare to screw up a computer.... unless the computer is full of incompatible software and or virus, trojan, spyware..  install the programs i posted and a good antivirus and you'lll be fine!

LOL  Gotta love the standard Windows Messenger Service.  Any of you on a network at work and want to mess around?

Open up Start | Run and copy and paste the following into the Dialogue Box:

net send * Your activities online have been reported to the proper authorities.  Shut your computer off now!!!

Click OK

Want to have even more fun?  Instead of typing out that command in the Run Dialogue, type out shutdown -i and click OK.  I won't coach you on how to use that though.  You have a blast playing w/ that one however, it's not that hard to figure out.
