The last snowfall motivated me to finally get the snowshoes out for a little adventure. It reminded me that the key to a good first day winter camping is to have plenty of tinder and an axe for both fire and shelter.

The key to a good second day of winter camping is to not melt your mittens on the first day.

The true key to winter camping is realizing that you're gonna freeze your dick off, no matter what you do about it.

Fire, fast.

Then set up.

Then get more wood.

I've found this to be the best book on the outdoors for the northern part of the U.S. and Canada:

I don't know if you're joking or not, but the worst sunburn I got on my face was from the glare off the ice while ice-fishing in the month of March.  I had good sunglasses but never thought to protect my face.

Next weekend is our annual winter camp. A few years back 1 friend found out the USGI wool glove liners are not 100% wool. Melted a new pair to a wood stove pipe.  Winter camping isn't too bad now we have ECWS gear. Used to go out with poor cold rated equipment  when we were in high school.

That's the one thing about wool that I love: fire/high temperature resistance.
