I just found out that the car a 'friend' sold me has an additional 30,000 - 40,000 miles on it because he had disconnected the odometer for a while.  I must say I am rather pissed about it.  Although I am not sure if I am more upset about the car or the fact that I was lied to.  I no longer feel this is a person I can trust and I have certainly lost respect for them.  I detest liars!  Am I overreacting or would you be pissed?

You should be pissed...

30 or 40 k is a lot more then "a while"!!!

...and that is a serious criminal violation.  If this is a person with a vehicle dealers license, it can be a biggie.

However, no matter what you decide to do, it won't make the vehicle have less mileage.

Any of the "friends" I run with would have said something during the deal. YMMV

You were scammed by a thief.

If you're not happy with the deal, call the guy on it. If you're satisfied with the car, keep it.
I'm not as concerned with mileage as I am with maintenance. I've seen low mileage cars that were shot due to neglect. As well, I've seen hign mileage cars that ran like a top because they were cared for.

Pissed off would be a understatement

The sad part is one only says that because you can only trust your family and friends as much as a stranger when it comes to both.

I would be pretty pissed off.
No one forgets a thing like that when selling a car.
I usually stated right on the title that false milage is a crime.

The guy knew. He lied to you.
Good luck, not sure what I would do in the same situation, but you are certainly within the norms by being pissed off.

I heard that in Illinois if you can prove odometer fraud you get the car and your money back. I don't know if it's true though.

That is FRAUD and is illegal

Tell him to give you some or all of you money back while holding a cell phone with the number typed in to report him.

+1

40,000 miles is 3-4 years of mileage for the average vehicle, he owes you money or else.

He purposely fu*ked you.
