I want to get a camcorder, but I am not sure what to get. I had my mind set on a Sony because I use one at work, but that model is out of my price range. I am looking for something around $500 or less. It will mainly be used for vacations and maybe a video or two of me shooting something cool.

Also, what format should I get? The Sony I use at work is MiniDV format. Please tell me of your experiences with different formats and brands, I'd greatly appreciate it.

this is the one I have...

Sony DCR-TRV27.  Nice little camera!

miniDV is the only way to go.  The only knock is that you have to use the camera to play back any video as there aren't any adapters made for the miniDV cassettes.

I would agree with a mini-DV, particularly SONY.  I have an old PC-100, and have been happy with it.
