Okay, I need schoolin' on portable MP3 players as I have never downloaded any type of music before.

Approximately how many songs would a 256MB player hold?

Not a lot at all. It mostly depends on how big the song file is.

Um - okaaaay.

Let's assume that we're using average sized files.

3, 7, 15, 8,000 ?????

With average compression: about 1MB per minute of music.  Higher Quality = less minutes.  Lower Quality = more minutes.

So you could have hq 256 min of music or 3 cds @ 80 min. That would be really low quality though.

CDs are 700mb and 80 min.
700/256=2.734375 or a little over 1/2 of a cd. If you can fit 3 then think about the quality.

if you keep them in mp3 format most songs are in the 3-5 mb range even at cd quality.

you could get between 45 and 50 songs on there.
