Does running in place for an extended period of time (half an hour to 45 minutes) offer any aerobic fitness or is it a waste of time?

Any continous activity longer than 20 minutes constitutes aerobic exercise.  Yes, it is beneficial.

Probably, but I think it would feel pretty futile after the first few minutes.

I remember trying it last year for about 25 minutes and I was sweating like a whore in church after I was done......I'm just not sure if it offers any aerobic benefit.

Anything that gets you off the couch is better than nothing.  There was a study that came out a few weeks ago talking about the fitness benefits of household chores like vacuming.

Try walking 5 miles first.

Then 10 miles

Harder than you think if you haven't done it for awhile.

If it gets your heart rate up very much, its at least giving you a decent workout.

In the cold months when I can't make it outside, I get one of those steps that are made for step aerobics and step up and down on that. It's pretty boring but at least gets you moving. Then after a while I might hold dumbells and step up and down.

Go do it for an hour and then answer your own question.

Got a treadmill.
Need to use it more often. Anything that gets your heart rate up for an exended period is good.
Im going to go hit the treadmill now. wish me luck going more than 10 minutes

Any activity that gets your heart rate up for an extended period is considered aerobic.

So yes there is a cardiovascular benefit.  But like any exercise program build yourself up slowly and consult a physician to check your current health.

There is a flood of books and online resources on fitness training.  Good luck and keep your interest going.

You can have all the money in the world, but if you dont have your health, your life can/will seriously suck.

You never seen a room full of people doing aerobics?
They aren't going anywhere, but they are getting exercise.
The dif between what they are doing, and just running in place is that they are exercising different muscle groups. Running in place will still exercise your heart and lungs, it's just really tedious.
