What exactly does it mean when you call someone a "Dandy"?

Is that the same as calling them a fag or a panzy?

Usually used sarcastically... meaning...

"noun: a man who is much concerned with his dress and appearance
adj: very good "

I haven't heard that term in the past 25-30 years.

I have never heard that term used to describe a person.

Except for: How ya doin'. Fine and dandy.

I haven't heard it used in years either.  And even then, it was usually used in the adj. form.  By the defenition, I would say that metrosexual would be similar.  I got the def. from ask.com.

Didn't Black Oak Arkansas have a song called "Jim Dandy to the rescue?"  Was there a subliminal meaning to the song?
Most southerners I've met here in Texas just call me "asshole."

Yes there is that song and I have seen them in concert. Don't know the words are very familiar with the song so I don't know.

I'm sure your fellow Texans are accurate in their assement.

I've heard dandy used as an adjective a few times, but never a noun.  Not in common speech anyway.  I thought that was more a British-ism, but I could be wrong.  If it's Southern, it ain't used around here.

Like calling someone a 'Nancy-boy'!

Actually, a 'Dandy' is not quite any of those terms, just someone who takes unnecessary or inappropriate care and attention to their clothing.

Yes, I've heard of that.  But that's not common speech.  That's an old song title.

"Hey, Bill, you ever get your truck fixed?"
"Naw, there's a problem with the dandy."

That would be common speech.

As in all things Southern, it strictly depends on the inflections used within the context of the conversation.

It's a saying like: "Bless his heart,"  which can be used to issue a reaction or comment that's anywhere from sincere sympathy to abject facetiousness.

I use "Dandy" in describing someone to relay anything from "he's cool," to "he's pretentious,"

or the traditional saying "That's Lovely" instead of "Fuck You"...it all depends on inflection and usage.

If I heard him correctly, Jim Bowie in the movie "The Alamo" called William Barrett Travis a "two-bit dandy" at the beginning.

They're not;  but the ignorant ones still fighting the civil war (on the side of Dixie), hating Catholics, yankees, and anybody who doesn't buy their bullshit think they're accurate.

Two traditional uses.

Dandy: adj. 1 Something that is pleasing or nice. "That coat looks just dandy!"

2 Used to describe a person who over-dresses in fancy regalia; foppish. "All British royalty look like a bunch of dandies."

Catholics and Yankees are some of my best friends. The War Between the States is over. Just need to keep the history straight.
