IBM is great for Notebooks.

Think about it.  Your notebook by definition is not high performance but high mobility, so get one where the case and all of the components will last not how fast it is for the cash.

I had a compaq and it fell apart in 2 years.Am now a new owner of a T42P

compac and hp suck imo

i got a sager and had worked w/ a dell--both are good, dell has great CS but over heating problems;  sager had more options for less price, works great(4080 is the model i got i think)

IBM and Toshiba are probably the best.  IBM's are mostly for business users.

I'm looking into getting a Toshiba w/ a 17" display here soon.

I've got a Dell Inspiron 8500.  I use it for school and work.  I've never had a problem with it.

Compaq/HP = No Go
Dell = Best Bang for the Buck
IBM = Best one out there (for now - is being sold to a Chinese company), but also the most expensive
Sony = No Go
Toshiba = Used to be one of the best out there, seems to have not kept pace

Anyway you go, definitely get the 3 year warranty (trust me).  Oh, and either be really careful or get some kind of insurance.  If you break the LCD through negligence, you're pretty much screwed (you'll have to pay to have it fixed and since it's one of the, if not the, most expensive single part, many times it's cheaper to buy a whole new laptop than pay for a replacement and repair fees).

I worked for a student computer help desk for over 2 years and of the hundreds of comps I worked on, I always liked the IBM's the best.

Dell is the best right now for the cost.  The new standard at work is a Latitude D600.     Bob

I've had a dell I 8600 for a year now.  No problems and great computer.  No overheating problems at all.  There is a free program called fangui that you can control your laptop fans to run and when and at what temp.

You can get pretty decent performance in a notebook if you're willing to pay for it. Me and most of the people I work with use notebooks pretty much exclusively, and have given up entirely on desktops except for servers or very high performance. If you're a gamer you'll probably want a desktop, but you can get notebooks that run year or two old games pretty well.

You need to think about what you want. Personally, since it is my exclusive machine during the day, I value a big screen, UGXA. Other people value battery life or small size.

I've been buying Dells lately. They're OK. They've had a few annoying glitches.

If you want a laptop Unix that works, the Macs are very, very tough to beat. Very popular in the CS world.
