I know this has been asked before but I can't remember what the consensus was. So does anyone know reliably if they are running low or something. I don't have the money to take the plunge yet but I certainly don't want to be surprised later on.

Everything I read says that they have enough Service Grade SA rifles to last a year or two.  They have enough Greek and Danish rack grade rifles to last "at least through Bush's second term".

You don't need a cr for a cmp.

Our M1's have been shipped all over the world. New sources become available from time to time. Before it was only the rifles stored in the U.S. Then the Danish returns, then the Greeks. Who knows what's next? One thing's for sure, they will be available for several more years as long as the CMP is allowed to operate.

OTOH, don't wait, buy now. Quantities are limited

The current supply is around 4 to 5 years on the M1 Garands.

The supply on the 03 and 03A3 is around 1 to 2 years.

Which ones are the most highly prized to own?

Any preferences from the lucky ones here that already own one?

What are the qualifications to get one? dont you have to be a member at a club or something?  I might pick one up just to work on in in the future and be glad that I have it now.

I've heard they've changed the requirments. If you have a carry permit you can have one delivered to your door. No other hoops to jump through.

that's not exactly true. You still need to be a member of an affiliated club and an american citizen, which rules out those dutch types who want garands.

You have to be a member of a CMP affiliated club... Your state rifle and pistol association should fulfil this requirement.

You have to have proof of marksmanship... That is, you have been in the military at some point in time, been an LEO, or have fired a match...

Fill out the paperwork, have a Notary Public sign off for you. (if you are military, your legal office will do this for you for free), and send in the money... about a month or two later a rfile will show up at your door, via FedEx...

I bought all my Garands and '03s from the CMP, not one thing wrong with them...
Keep in mind, these are USED ARMY RIFLES... DO NOT EXPECT A FACTORY NEW PEICE. Your gun will almost certainly have dents in the stock, and finish were. The parts will not match. This is OK, you have  REAL peice of history as this is how the armories really kept them. The CMP does test them to make sure they are safe to fire.

Before shooting, break the gun down, clean it and lube it according to the instruction booklet that they give you.

I'm not a true M1 Garand afficianado, but my guess would be the the sniper versions of the M1 Garand. The M1C sniper is the most desireable of the sniper rifles. Few of the them were made because of the amount of machining(read cost too much to make) on a hardened receiver for the scope mount necessary to make them into a sniper rifle. At the CMP auction for these guns, they were going for thousands of dollars. Next, the more plentiful M1Ds as they require less machinng, these were sold by drawing by the CMP initially for $800, then raised to $1,200 towards the end.

You may also see a bunch of 8 little holes on the stock, they were made when some soldiers would take a clip full of ammo and bang them tip first on the stock to seat them before inserting them into the mag well.

another stupid question from me, my second about this today,
do i have to join a club if im in the military?

GlockLuvinRedleg: contact the CMP, I think they have certain exemptions for active duty military personnel, at least they did. You may not have to jump through all of those hoops in order to get your Garand.

I am looking into one of these. Check the CMP website. There are NUMEROUS clubs and you don't have to actually fire a match to get your rifle since you are military. PLUS the $25 membership fee certainly goes to a good cause. In AL there are many, many clubs that are hosted by high school ROTC shooting teams so my $25 I consaider a donation to a very worthy cause!

I hope to order my rifle in the next month or so.

Yes, you DO have to join a club if you are in the military.
However, you already have proof of marksmanship...
Send in a photcopy of your Military ID card and your club membership card.

Just join your state rifle and pistol association by mail..

A C&R meets one of the requirements needed if you don't have a CCW or prior Military
service . I'm waiting on mine as well .
