Hey guys,
I'm hoping this title will get some attention to help me out.

First let me say I'm not trying to solicit individual donations. I'm more looking for ideas. I wouldn't want to take away from all the great work you guys are doing for the WIA's.

I was talking to a bud tonite who is a SGT with the local county agency.  He is the street supervisor for his area.  We got talking about gangs and guns and I asked if any his guys carried any patrol rifles.  He told me they could but they had to purchase their own.

To me that sucks. I asked why he didn't have one and he got quiet and humble and said money is too tight.

If pisses me off that ball players make millions but these guys, Fireman and teachers are sometimes just scraping by.

I want to get him a rifle.
I do ok, but I cant just go out and drop the cash for one. This is why I am asking for ideas or maybe even a dealer that could get me one at cost.

I guess even a good used one that was 100% reliable would be ok. It would kill me if he or one of his guys got hurt due to a malfunction.

I was thinking an m4gery type with a flattop with a carry handle or arms irons and collapsible stock.
This way I could get him an EO as time and cash permitted.

I dont want to embarrass the guy and wont post his name or agency but if anyone questions the legitimacy of it, We could have one of the resident Officers here  (Aim for my head is local) contact him to show its for real with no tricks.

So if anyone has any good ideas for good quality at the best prices or maybe you are a dealer that would like to help out, please speak up. I feel odd about it as I never ask anyone for help but I want this guy to have a rifle. He would roll on all the "hot" calls.

The only thing I have quite a few of is mags. I can hook him up with new USGI mags.

Could a mod tack this for 24hrs so we can see if anyone has some good ideas?

Thanks in advance for any help.

If money is tight, a mini-14 makes a great patrol rifle.

You know, a good lever action 30-30 or even pistol caliber lever gun is a hell of a rifle.  They can be had inexpensively and are far better than any pistol.  Reliable as a hammer and easy to shoot.  Has the side benefit of being very politically correct.  A 30-30 would have far more energy on target than any reasonable handgun as well and a range advantage over any shotgun.   Alternatively you may look at a good SKS.  $150ish will buy one and 10 rounds of 7.62x39 is quite formidable.

Even though cost may be an issue I strongly suggest a AR type weapon. It's currently the "in" thing for LEO's and you can go from mild to wild based on needs/budget.

try a cavarms type AR I love mine.
They perform and are normally $200 to $250 for a complete lower.
Grab an upper for anywhere between $299 to $500.

edit to add pics + Links:

Warranties are a big +

CAV-15 Receivers have a life time warranty.  If your receiver ever breaks in the course of normal use we will replace it for free.  If your receiver ever breaks through misuse, neglect, or by accident (fire, car wreck, etc.) we will replace it for $30.00 plus shipping.

Ameetec has them for $230
Model 1 has Complete (with b/c/c.h.) M4 upper $340

Definatly an AR. It would not be good to look outside and see someone who looks like a cop holding an SKS or a 3030. That's what the home invasion pos do.

Sure, but you're the officer responding to a call.   You have a Glock/sig/whatever and the option of grabbing a 30-30 or your shotty.  Barricaded suspect..... what do you do?   Me, it's the lever gun coming out..

Isn't there a Gov't program where Police agencies can get old surplus M14 and M16s for cheap or free on a Form 10 ?  I think LAPD did this and then converted them to semi auto only.  I don't know if they just removed the sears or how they did it.

Has his dept checked into Milsurp rifles?

I believe our Uncle Sugar A2s cost about $20 apiece (or somewhere around there) through the DRMO.

I would post this in the Brothers of the Shield forum, I know more that a few of our resident LEOs have dealt with this program.

Just an idea.

If I were truly too po to buy an AR as my patrol rifle I would go with a $150 Marlin 30-30 from the pawn shop. Simple, cheap, effective, PC. Spray the wood black and call it tactical.

+1

A lever gun and a pistol is better than just a pistol.  An AR would be better but it sounds as if cost is a big issue here.

Of course if you get a lever gun, you better get a cowboy hat to go with it - if you gotta use it, you might as well go in for the full 'John Wayne' effect.
