I am a pre-vet student working at a vet hospital in a county shelter. A warrant was served on for a drug raid, and this poor guy was "acting aggressive" towards the dog in the K9 unit. He didnt bite anybody, and wasnt even pepper sprayed prior to catching lead. We removed the bullet and was it taken into evidence. It expanded nicely, looked to be a .40. Dog "Bear" survived, and was nothing but a big baby while we treated him. Unfortunately, this isnt the first time this has happened around here, this one didnt make it into the news either. Makes you wonder how often it really happens.

I don't know why, and it's nothing you said, but IBTL. This could get ugly.

Cop dogs are expensive.  Probably would've done the same thing.

Somehow I am not surprised. Glad the dog made it though.

hehe I thought the cops shooting dogs thing was just kind of a internet joke thing. Here awhile back the cops here were doing some investigations. I made a joke to the cops about them shooting dogs. Well funny thing was the cop I was joking with said he has had to shoot dogs before.

it wasnt a pitbull. If it was a pitbull the media would have been on that one.

Yes, the cop shot the dog after the dog that was shot acted aggressive towards the K9 unit dog.

So let me get this straight. Search warrant is served. During the time it is being served an aggressive dog gets in the way and gets shot.  What's the problem???

Or are you maybe talking about a story you didn't really see cause you weren't there?

Glad the dog didn't hurt any of the officers.

Duh! Dogs are usually agressive towards other dogs in their territory! They dont  know that they are cop dogs now do they care! Remember! They are Dogs! Thats what they do!

Shoot a canine police dog and try arguing in court it's not a cop.

The K-9 was in the car and Bear was barking at it? For me, killing was a last resort, not a "first opportunity", but I was only a soldier. I had to let them have the first shot. They could growl all they wanted....

+1 IF it was aggressive at home and nice at the vet it was likely because it felt it was protecting is territory and or owner. No brainer there. Kinda makes me think if some people here are no brainers too. I'm sure pepper spray wouldn't have worked........

I have never responded to one of these threads.... But from my view it's like this.  If you train your dog to be aggressive towards the cops and break the law, count your blessings on the search warrant if the dog lives.   If you have a peaceful, docile dog, that gets capped on a warrant, that is wrong...

I took part on a Federal warrant about 6 years ago on a guy who was suspected of trafficking in marijuana.  He had 16 german shephards in his yard.  That's what he did as a cover was breed these dogs.

Turned out, we were lucky...  We used fire extinguishers first, and the dogs hated it.  there were only four "mean ass" dogs in the bunch, and the owner opted to "put them in their pen" before we had to "run out of extinguishers".

Turned out we discovered over 65 pounds of marijuana that night in the warrant, about 15 of that was in the doghouse in the pen the owner put the "mean pups" in.

I actually got one of the 16 dogs in the raid when all was said and done.  She turned out to be a hell of a "sniffer".

ETA:   Point is, I bet the majority of this dog killing bashing bandwagon is BS.  What if we hadn't thought of fire extinguishers that night?  How many pup's would have bought it?   They all barked and charged us.  Only after a minute or two in the yard did we figure out which ones meant it.

Put yourself in those shoes.... how many would you have shot?

You want "Ironic"... He lived two doors down from me and my roomie (Also Narcotics Cop).   We had moved out to the "Sticks" to get away from it... Little did we know.

As far as the dog (Nikita), The owner got out on bail, and had to attempt to "play legit" before trial.  I had grown fond of her on the two days we searched his house, barn, and acres.  She had pretty much led me to the plants/evidence (as I said above, we only made him put four in the pen).

Well, I went to purchase her, and got some pretty weird looks and gestures, but he sold her to me anyway.

I'm shocked he did not go for the head shot. Poor aim I guess.
