Picked up a Surefire G2 at Cabelas today ($38). WOW. It is definately a bright flashlight. It says that it is 65 lumens and that there is a 120 lumen option? Is that worth it. Seems that it would pretty much double the brightness.

Hell of a price difference between the aluminum ones and this one.

[#1]
The price difference should be even greater.
It doesn't cost squat to injection mold, as compared to the extrusion and milling of the aluminum lights.  I'm not bitching, because I've got two G2s and an older 6z and I love them all.

i just picked up a pila g3 rechargeable last week. 130 lumes. yes it is SIGNIFICANTLY brighter than my surefire g2. The pila will also run the surefire p91 bulb for 210 lumens should you ever need to replace the sun.
1/29/2005 3:45:58 PM EDT
[#3]
How does the Pila recharge? Is there a jack or just exposed terminals that go into a recepatacle?
1/29/2005 3:50:23 PM EDT
[#4]
the pila comes with a seperate recharger that looks like a standard nicad charger. remove the batteries and put in the charger.  2 pilla batteries equal 3 cr123's. the only drawback to them is there is no giveaway the batteries are low. the light reamins 100% until the the charge gets weak then it shuts off completely.

the pila was about 50.00 cheaper than the compaerable surefire and a tad brighter. The beam on mine is everybit as good as my neighbors 8ax surefire.

Nothing is stronger then a Mag light! I saw a Peterbuilt tractor back over one and that damm thing was fine!!!! That Pete weighed over 25,000 lbs and this was against concreet! Surefires are brighter but not as tough!

your joking right? have you held a metal surefire? the case is as thick or thinker than a maglight and the smaller diameter would make it even stronger. Hell i have seen a peterbuilt drive over a person. that means squat.

That impressed the hell out of me! When I saw that I was sold on Mag's. Surefires could be as strong, I don't know but for the price nothing beats a Mag! To bad they can't connect to a gun like a Surefire...not as tactacal!

If a Pete ran over a person they are dead and mash potatos!

I have two G2's.  One black, and one tan.  I love them.

Trying to convice myself on the money for one of these babies.  But its hard for me to justify $100 for a flashlight when the G2's are $40 each and I am happy with them.

The story is what was cool.  I have it in the Surefire calendar, but I don't feel like typing the whole thing out.

Basicly, dude bought the flashlight two days before.  Was reaching for something when his 22 handgun fell out and went off.  The surfire saved his life.

I frankly prefer the 60 lumen bulb because it offers more usage time. I am not one of those people whose tactical toys get limited to usage in tactical situations. I frequently need the white light to deal with the more mundane emergencies of life, and as such would rather have a longer lasting light than a brighter one, as the standard lamp is already pretty bright for my needs.

Not to mention it gets hotter than you-know-what if left on for more than a minute as is.

Maglite is a great light for cheap, but Surefire makes the best lights in the world.

Take it from someone who depends on a flashlight at work every day.

I own  the 8AX Commander (rechargeable) for about 1 1/2 years now. Replaced the bulb ONCE!

It's brighter than my 3 D cell Maglite, and the light quality is FAR better.

Oh, and Streamlite sucks! Trust me, it's not even a close second.

Maglites are notorious for battery corrosion/leaks(usually happens when they sit unused for a long time), and they're not even close to a SureFire in terms of light output. The primary reason they're popular with LE is their weight and length easily lend themselves to use as an impact weapon if necessary. I gave my dad my 2D Mag for utility use, got a G2 Nitrolon and never looked back.

All battery makers will say take the batteries out of a device that will not be used regularly.

I think Mag-lites are worse for the batteries, because Mag-lites are airtight. So the gases coming of the batteries stay in the Mag-lite.

Next, , the reason Mag-lites are popular with LE, is that LE generally uses the Mag-Charger lights. They have a 100+ lumen bulb FYI, and are fairly rugged. Not to mention not having to keep buying batteries. Mag-Lites spot-flood focusing also allows police to set the light for the situation. Sharply focused "tactical" lights aren't very good when you need to check an ID or light up a notebook to take some notes. Often there is too much light in too small of an area, and you can't see that area.

Maglites also lend themselves to being put underarm, so that officers have both hands free, and have light, little lights don't do that well.

Well... where to start?  where to start?

#1 Yes, the maglite is a nice light.... as a basis for modding into BETTER lights.  Taking a 3D maglight and turning it into something that will put out 1,234 bulb lumens, or over 800 Lumens out the front is a thing to behold.

I USED to own a "normal" maglite.... now I regard the STOCK maglite the way most of us regard Hesse ARs.

As a club, or as a cheap tough light, the mag is Okay.  As a tool, it is less than stellar.

The Brinkman Maxfire LX, mentioned above, purchased at walmart, is an awesome "gateway" flashlight.  It BEGINS to show what is possible in the hand held flashlight arena.

Try looking up anything with a "Luxeon Star" Led.  Such as a mag converted with a Luxeon 3, and anything from "Elektro Lumens" including the Tri Star Phazer (have one).

Then start playing with the Thor, and then get into HID.

COZ:

Be careful... the G2 is a gateway drug.

"is 120 lumens worth it?".... Well that depends, what do you want to do with the light?  A 9p can give you 105 lumens for an hour, an M3 can give you 125 for an hour, the M6 (my personal fav) will give you 250 lumens for an hour, or 500 lumens for 20 min straight... with 2 thermal shutdowns occuring... one at 10 min, and then the final thermal shutdown at around 20 min.

If you try leaving the G2 on for any length of time... you will notice it will become warm, sometimes uncomfortably warm.  It will become warmer faster with the 120 lumen bulb.  Keep in mind, that 120 lumens will burn through your batteries in 20 min, (longer with intermittent use).

So it depends on what you want?  How bright?  How far away do you want to see?  And what kind of runtime?

Have a good one.

Stainless
