I make my husband's lunches each morning before he leaves for work. I generally make a roast beef or corned beef or ham sammich for him [as this is what he prefers] along with a peanut butter & Jelly sammich on homemade bread. I also toss in a few veggies and chips for munchies. Well sadly to report Mr. pattymcn's last cholesterol check came back high. So now he's on a more modified diet of turkey pastrami [low fat/low cholesterol] or turkey ham [same] and no pb & J sammaches. He is obviously vary melancholy about this so my Q for the day is what do you put in your lunches [healthy wise] that could make things a bit tastier for him? Patty |

Depending on his age, wieght and family history of heart desease the normal sandiches may be just fine. Maybe more oatmeal for brekfast, more excercise, (lose some wieght) less dairy products (ice cream, milk, coffee cream etc..) |
He nordic tracks every other day for 40 minutes and lifts weight [has been doing it for 10 years now] he weighs the exact same amount as he did in High School. Before we were married [8 years ago] he tested just fine but now he's a bit high. I think the Christmas Holidays had something to do with it but his daily PB & J sammaches probably weren't the best thing either. His level is: Chol: 233 Trig: 114 HDL: 44 LDL: 166 So diffinately not anything to lose sleep over but he needs to get the 233 below 200 and the 166 below 130. Patty |

How about grilled chicken breast or fish fillets. They make a good sammich. Then there is tuna which can be made many ways. It gets too nasty here in winter for using the Weber, so I have a George Foreman grill. It's not the same as a real grill but it's not too bad. It makes it easy to grill fish or chicken for lunches. I try to stay away from the turkey pastrami, and turkey ham because of the preservaties and sodium. |
Chicken Breast and Fish Fillets sound good. I'll add that into the menu. I try not to use tuna too much because of all the Murcery scare. Patty |
OK, first of all, ANY FISH THAT COMES FROM A CAN, is not ment for HUMANS to eat, OK.... |
| I know its kinda chilly up north but my wife bbq's chicken breasts for my lunch. She cuts them thin and makes a sandwhich out of it. Fresh tomatos kept seperate from the rest of the sandwhich so as not to make it to moist. Never use iceburg lettuce as it has almost no vitamins. I prefer red leaf or romain lettuce myself. Stay away from the cheese and easy on the mayo. Salt and pepper to taste. Veggies are good as a replacement for chips or similar stuff. My wife always includes some type of fruit as well. My favorite is when she puts in fresh Gala apples. Of yeah, gotta love them raisins too. |

Make sure that he's eating a "high fiber" diet..Oatmeal for breakfast is the best. Here's a link to a good place to start...nine foods that lower cholesterol There is alot of good info to be found on google regarding this. I am a personal trainer and have helped alot of my clients with diets. If you'd like more help please IM me. |
We do use the natural peanutbutter when it's available. Unfortunately its not readily available in our area. I make his bread with ground wheat and stone ground flour [also wheat] so it's pretty healthy for him but we're going to mind our Ps and Qs for a while. Thank you though to all with tips. I'm checking out website now! Patty |
I agree Red_Beard and I'm sorry to hear about your Dad. I had a brother inlaw die of a heart attack at 40 so I am cautious and protective to say the very least. Patty |

Sandwiches: lean roast beef with lettuce, tomato, and Dijon mustard. Or some smoked salmon and dark heavy bread with Dijon. Apples are good for lunch, and so is Ryekrisp. Any chance he would like humus (ground chickpeas with seasme oil, oilive oil,and lemon juice)? GunLvr |
Yes, he does?! Is that an ARFCOM no no?

Assume you already know this, but peanuts (peanut butter) do not contain any cholesterol Fats yes, but cholesterol no....... Cholesterol is an animal product only and cannot come from veggies, legumes (nuts) fruits, grains, etc. Of course, the fats are always a concern, but it gives you a few more options at least.... And PB&J is GOOD +1 on the oatmeal.. damn good stuff and healthy for you too.... Hope ya get him squared away soon. |
I think you're right [I know you're right] about good Peanut Butter but that Jiffy stuff they sell here has a lot of homo fat [can't spell it] which isn't good for him. If I can get out there where they have just plain ground PB than - that is what I'll get him and he can have his PB & J's again! Poor guy, has to do without now. Thank you for the tips everyone! Patty ETA Thank you Painter!

Anyone here ever try PBJ and beer? A long time ago I worked with an old guy that would have 2 PBJs and 2 Budweisers every day for lunch. So I tried it once. Except NOT with Bud.< Believe it or not, another thing that PBJs taste good with is tomato soup. Sounds disgusting but is actually quite tasty. |

No HAM!
