Got a problem here.  I've got a total of $257,300.00 on an invoice.  I need to make it $214,000.00.  There are 32 line items on this invoice.  What percentage of each line item would I need to subtract to make the 214,000.00?

257,300-214,000=43,300

43,300/257,300=16.8%

You need to discount that much from the first 31 items. Adjust the last item to hit 43,300 exactly.

The OTHER way is 43,300/32

Subtract the result from lines 1-31, and adjust line 32.

Take your pick. My invoice is in the mail.

multiply all of the lines by 0.831713953

should you really be dealing with hundreds of thousands of dollars if you can't figure this out?

I don't normally deal with this kinda stuff.  Usually my computer does it all for me.    It's not working in this instance for some reason.

Somebody needs to go back to math class.

There's nothing "math" about that -- all the math needed was learned in elementary school.

It's actually setting up problems, thinking through things, and most of all, using common sense that people seem to have so much trouble with... frankly it's distressing

my approach, you need to make each item 214,000/257300 th's of the original item or  83.171385%
of the original item.  That would mean shaving off 1 - .83171385 or .16828 or  16.828%

Sounds like math to me. The more math you do the more problem solving skills you lear. The more math you do, the more logic you learn. The more math you learn the more likely you'll have common sense.

The more math you know and do, the more likely you will excell in life. Math is the key to success in life.
