I was talking to some people in chat a night ago and we were talking about shooting propane tanks.  Someone said they couldnt be set off by shooting them even with an external flame and I disagreed.  This pic is of a camping propane tank a little over 100 yards away.  I shot it with 7.62x39 FMJ.  There was a candle about 6 feet from the tank.  If you put them closer, the tank blows them out. This came from a buddies DV camara and is one of the better pics I have of our redneckery.

Enjoy

Cool pic.  But I thought tracers would set them off.  No?

they will

Its also easier to use a road flare closer to the target since those WONT blow out.

Citabria, have you seen propane tanks explode using tracers?

Maybe out of something NFA but a single tracer has never set off a propane or other flammable tank in my experience.  I've put to rest probably 1000 such tanks and assorted containers.

We didnt have a road flare this time either.  So we made due with a candle.

I did it at ETH farm.    It was a small colman bottle (Green)

the big ones we had flares for.  I set off a few using just tracer fire .

1st rd was Q3131A
2nd was Tracer

Becareful though sometimes the pressure of the bottles makes them want to fly away.  Just ask the texas crew who where almost bombarded while watching us shoot propane

Ive shot them with tracer, incidiary, API, APIT in calibers from .308 to .50bmg.  Always needed some sort of fire outside to set it off.

20lb propane tank with a small acetelyne tank taped to it.  Road flare for ignition.  .50 APIT for effect.

Somewhere I have a pic of the mushroom cloud that resulted from a grill sized full tank that was hung in a tree.  It burned all the leaves out of the tree in about 3 seconds and then it was just smoke.  The tree was bare and it was july.  The tree even lived to tell the tale.
