As I am not done with it yet, here are the parts:

AMD Athlon 64 4000
               or
AMD Athlon 64 FX-55
Tagan 480w PS
Coolermaster Wave case
Abit AX8 Motherboard
Corsair XMS PC3200 (512x2) (factory matched pair)
ATI Radeon X700 PCI-E
               or
ATI Radeon X850 PCI-E
Pioneer 16x16 dual layer DVDRW
Plextor Premium 53x32x52 CDRW
Silver Stone SST-SDP01 6-in-1 Card Reader
WD Raptor 74GB HD (x2)
WD Cavier SE 250GB HD (x2)

All HD will be run in RAID, fans are enermax thermal controlled fans (x3). All wired are sleaved or heat shrinked. I am not sure of the CPU or chipset cooler yet, hell I am not in any hurry cause the MB hasent even been released yet and I will not pay $800 for a processor.

What's the usage on this machine?

I'd plan on adding two more fans one on the side and one on top as exhaust fans, those 4 drives are going to get pretty warm.
1/1/2005 11:54:18 AM EDT
[#2]
add some heat piping to the drives and bay coolers if you can.
1/1/2005 12:13:03 PM EDT
[#3]
I would go with Ballistix (crucial) ram, 2x512 for best performance.

Otherwise looks like a monster :)  Hope you have some decent cooling.

Maybe an XP-90 with a Volcano 80mm high CFM fan for your CPU HS/Fan combo.  Just be sure to get a controller so that sucker isn't too loud :P

I currently have 12 (including cpu) fans in my system atm heh.  All are 80mm or larger.

I want a quiet comp too so that is why only 3 fans so far. The HD will be spaced apart cause I have 8 3.5" slots. Two fans will be in front drawing air over the drives to the middle comp, I havent decided if I will put in more fans to draw the air out or not.

Could someone show me what you are talking about as far as the heat piping and bay coolers.

What kind of chipset cooler should I get?

Two fans in + 1 fan out isn't going to be very efficient.

If you count the PSU fan exhausting out the back, it should be fairly balanced.

I would recommend 120mm fans if you are concerned abt noise, but it seems your case won't accomodate them without modding.
1/1/2005 2:55:33 PM EDT
[#7]
Yes I would have to mod it, the case is all aluminum so I like the way it is now but I will mess with it if I have too, I have a dremel and lots of bits for it.

See my little painting, what should I do about the red areas?
1/1/2005 3:03:13 PM EDT

put a fan or two on top.  why do you need so much cooling? you gonna overclock everything?
1/1/2005 3:03:21 PM EDT
[#9]
You can remove all of the slot covers in back, eliminating the dead area under the video card.
1/1/2005 3:04:48 PM EDT
[#10]
Dont forget, your PSU has a fan to, that will take care of some of the heat on top.

Nothing.

There will be very little heat in the PCI slot area.
The power supply fan will take care of any heat at the top of the case.

You're building it. Cool. I want to build a desktop too. Where are you getting your parts?
1/1/2005 3:09:06 PM EDT
[#13]
IMHO, (I'd recommend checking in with the folks over at the arstechnica case and cooling forums about possible mods).

The dead air isn't a terrible problem, since it shouldn't be hot components there and the important components are covered by airflow. The vid card is farly close to the exaust fan, and the optical drives will only heat up when you spin them up. Phil's got a good point about the balance, you want to keep the inflow and outflow balanced, so if you were to add a bay cooler to a front bay, you should probably see if you can fit a bigger exhaust fan in the back.

Start at computer parts

newegg.com, pcs-performance.com, all over the place. Those two sities and str8buy.com is where I am getting all stuff, case from star8buy, accessories and silver plextor drive from pcs-per and everything esle from newegg.

Almost forgot, mobo from excaliburpc.com

I must have looked for an hour for an easy link, but for some reason this bug isn't talked about much. The only way to see this is to download the users guide for the motherboard similar to the one you are planning on buying HERE. Look on page 2-3 for the memory configuration set up. It seems like the dual channel FX isn't bothered by the memory bank errors found on the regular Athlon64. The most RAM speed lost is just 66Mhz.

Compare that to my Asus K8V with an Athlon64 3200+ on it HERE. Look at page "1-11". My memory speed variation is between 200Mhz and 400Mhz, depending on the RAM setup I choose. So, I had to buy two 512MB double sided RAM sticks at DDR400. If I add any more RAM, the RAM speed will drop to DDR200.

If I were you, I would get the Athlon64 FX!
1/1/2005 7:12:25 PM EDT
[#20]
I have almost the exact same setup:

AMD FX-53 (retail, with stock heat sink)
    Gigabyte K8NSNXP nForce3 Ultra
Corsair TwinX matched pair 512 MB PC3200
eVGA nVidia 6800 GT - clocked at Ultra speeds
    2 x WD Raptor 740 in RAID 0
    Plextor PX-712a DVD/R-RW combo drive
    PC Power&Cooling Turbo-Cool 510
    Coolermaster Wave case

When I origonally put this together, I had an eVGA 6800 Ultra in it, but the card is bad. I got constant lock-ups while playing games. So, I went and got a 6800 GT to replace it. I am going to call eVGA next week and see what I can do with the crippled 6800 Ultra.

The system flies.

Why RAID the drives??  If one goes out, you lose everything.  I would buy 4 exactly alike and RAID 5 them.  I'd also invest in a top notch power supply like Antec, Enermax, etc.  It's the heart of the computer and will usually outlast all of the other components.  I'd also get a Thermalright HS fan.  I use the SP-97 with a fan controller.  It rocks.  Good solid choices otherwise.  Good luck.

I would, if I could get most of my games running. I have 3 linux boxes already.
Alas, if you want to game, you need Windows.

Also, considering that AMD's 64 bit CPUs run 32bit software faster than anything Intel makes at the same clock speed, I'll take it, TYVM.

The 250GB's will be in RAID 0 or in RAID 0+1 ( I havent decided yet) while 74GB will be in raid 0 (programs only). I am getting the Cooler Master Hyper 6 CPU Heatpipe Cooler KHC-V81 for my CPU. I am not sure if I will use a thermal fan with a sensor to control the fan or if I will use a fan that I can manually adjust.

What distro do run? Gentoo isn't totally stable on AMD-64 (and it's a bit of a pain getting 32-bit binaries for Flash and wmp codecs). Plan to do a 32-bit install for now, buy a Raptor a few months down the road, and install 64-bit then. Should make for a nice upgrade.

Lots of folks are going the 2x Raptors in RAID 0 even though Tom's or Anand showed it only gives abt a 1-2% improvement in load times. Not worth the 2x risk of HD failure, IMHO.

"factory matched" is a marketing term used to inflate the price based on perceived value. There is no difference whatsoever between a Corsair PC3200 factory matched pair of ram and two Corsair PC3200 sticks of ram that happen to be the same size/model.

Do whatever is cheaper, but knowing that "factory matched" is a bunk term.

The whole computer? I am not sure as of yet.

CPU $600
MB $126
RAM $220
VC $400
CASE $ 150
PS $80
HD (all 4) $800
CDRW $120
DVDRW $ 120
Case modding supplies $150
CPU heatsink $50

These are all estimate numbers but this comp wont be cheap. I could of built one for a lot less $$$ but I did that last time. I want the best one I can build this time.

All the prices depend on what you get too esp the CPU and VC.

My comp is about 2.5 years old but she is on her 2nd CPU, 3rd MB, 2nd VC, 2nd PS, 2nd Case so almost everything has been replaces except for my drives, 1 HD is an rma so it is the org and the CDRW was a RMA but they told me nothing was wrong with it but they sent me a new and better one back :D.

I am doing a complete fresh biuld this time. i will fix the prob with my old computer and either sell it ( I know people who want to buy it already) or I will give it to my sister, she is a single mom so I try to help her all I can but it is really hard when she is in WA and I am in DE.

I could put on together (comp only, no display, mouse, or keyboard) for a few hundred. Prices depend on what you want, if you want the lastest and greatest (like me), expect to pay a whole lot more.

I dont feel that bad cause my dad was telling me about a year ago how he had bought this kick ass HP P4 with a LCD diplay. I thought it was really cool till I saw it. all I really remember is an 80GB HD, some Gforce video (not sure if it was built in or not) and the dinky 15" LCD display. My current comp would kick its ass.

Athlon XP (Barton) 2800 (333)
AT7-MAX2
Win XP SP2
Extremo 550W PS
Kingston DDR 400 1GB (512x2)
Asus Radeon 9600xt 128MB
WD 40GB 7200RPM
Maxtor 160GB 7200rpm
Asus 32x12x48

I know its ghetto, why do you think I am building a new comp?

Asus A8N-SLI  Motherboard
PC PowerCooling Turbo Cool 510 Power Supply
