[ARCHIVED THREAD] - High beams... (Page 1 of 2)

Coming home from a basketball tourney tonight, have someone behind me with their lights on bright.  So I slow down, hoping they would pass me.  I got as slow as 25, they never budged.  Fuckers were behind me for about 15 miles before they turned off.

Do people just not realize their high beams are on?  Or do they just not give a fuck?

I thought about pulling over and letting them get in front, but didn't feel like provoking anyone.

Sometimes I wonder why I even bother to drive.

I've often wondered the same thing.  I'm hoping people just forget that they're on................if not, there are ALOT of inconsiderate MF's driving around.

Do people just not notice that they're on?  I honestly think some people just don't give a fuck and the only thing they pay attention to while driving is a spot on the road about 20' in front of their bumper.

[#3]
I have had the same problems, I sometimes cant see well and have to "brake for that deer that ran out of the woods".

They normal pass after you do that a few times.

I have went into oncoming lanes at people driving with them on before.
12/28/2004 8:14:26 PM EDT
[#4]
So stop and make them go around.
12/28/2004 8:15:17 PM EDT
[#5]
you can adjust your rearview mirror to shine their highbeams back at them

If they are tailgating or have the High Beams on, just remember, the speed limit is the MAXIMUM allowable speed for ideal weather conditions. Feel free to go 20 in a 35.

That's how I sometimes deal with that behavior from other drivers.

I would say that when driving toward people, it is pretty plausible that people just forget (yeah, they have their heads up their asses, but no malice present......one would hope).  But in YOUR case, where the asshat is right behind you, I would think that any maroon could tell that their high beams are on, and then promptly shut them off so as to not be King Asshat.  Looks like you had an encounter with Royalty tonight.

Yeah, that little blue lamp indicator on their instrument cluster just isn't enough sometimes.

Makes you wish you had one of those $2900 Surefire superflashlights to stick out the window and aim back at them.

(this reminds me, though, that I need to re aim my low beams.  I screwed up the adjustments a while back when I disassembled the headlamps to do a couple mods.  I tweaked them with some new bright ass bulbs, but they are aiming a little too high)

I just install driving lights on my rear bumper with a toggle switch for "backing up at night", or when asshats forget to turn their high beams off, I politely remind them to.

Grab your rear view mirror and adjust it so that his own lights are shining back into his own eyes.  It's not that tough.   And it has always worked for me.

20 years ago I would see people flicking them on and off as another car approaches - now I see it two or three times a year. I see more people driving in the dark with no lights then I see using their hi beams properly. Of course it would be illegal and just plain wrong to remove your factory bulbs that are like 40/60 watts and replace them with 60/120 watt bulbs wouldn't it?

Do it all the time. I also re-aim both sideviews to reflect back. Usually they get the hint and either shut them off or back off.

For on coming traffic I hold in the flash to pass so my lows and highs are on and angle the car towards them slightly so it shines right in their face at close range.

Have thought about adding some "aux back up lighting" in the dual 55 watt class that would strobe to get their attention.

It is a real good way to melt your factory wiring harness too. The shitty 18-20ga wire is not designed to run that much wattage. I have seen bulbs and sockets with melted prongs/plastic where they plug together.

I'm feeling Hella good about 80/100W bulbs, and will relay why to you.

I thought about doing that, only with fog lights.  I cant come up with a way to swing them down into position from under the bumper though.

My '64 Cuda had a neat option.  The "R" button on the pushbutton automatic transmission selector wuld turn the reverse lights on with moderate pressure, regardless of what gear the car was actually in.

It was safe, because it takes a stiff push after you hit resistance to engage the gear, plus Chrysler transmissions of the era had a reverse gear lockout that would simply put the trans in Neutral at forward speeds over about 10 mph.

But I digress.  Somehow, flashing the reverse lights at people who are tailgating or driving with brights on really gets their attention.  Great fun, I need to rig up a pushbutton on my Neon to do that.

I was driving home late one night in the country.
The car I was following was probably a tenth of a mile away, when a car came over
the crest of a hill towards us with it's high beams on.

The car I was following flashed it's high beams to encourage the other car to dim.

The other car turned on more lights....  Red and Blue flashers.  State Cop.

I know it is illegal to flash your high beams (at least in Illinois), but jeesh.

I drove past, and always wondered if the cop was trolling.

One of our security guys had an old Lincoln with fog lights mounted in the rear window. I suppose that was his way of reminding people to dim their lights.

Years ago, I used to keep a boat down on the Chesapeake bay...about an hour ride down what was, at the time, a mostly 2 lane country road.  Lots of times, I'd be experiencing the same problem...fuckers with their high beams on following for miles.

I finally got a brainstorm...I grapped the 1,000,000 candle power portable spot off the boat, and took it with me in the car.  When one of those dumbasses w/ the highbeams on got behind me, I'd just shoot the damn spot over my shoulder at them....it usually did the trick.  In some cases, the results were quite dramatic

A $20 handheld spot light out your back window will do the trick.  Keep mine in the truck for just that reason.  If they come around me without turning to low beams then they are in for it.  My truck rides just at the right level to give them their own medicine.

Slight threadjack:

I have a 1996 Chrysler minivan and the headlighs are abysmal.  Anyone have any idea what the highest wattage bulbs I can install without damaging the plastic lenses?  I know that I'll have to re-wire with better hardware and relays.

Thanks.

Lately I've been seeing more and more clueless driver who are driving down the road at night with NO lights on...and what can you say about someone who doesn't get the message when EVERY car on the road,  either in his lane or in the opposing lane, is flashing all of his lights at him, including turning them completely off and then back on, several times?  And he STILL doesn't turn on his lights!

I think terminal stupidity is contagious, and it's easiest to find on the road.

The one or two times I have brain farted and driven after dark with no lights were apparent to me almost imediately because I couldn't see my guages.

Same with blinker idiots.

Don't these people EVER look over their guages to see what's what re gas, oil pressure, temp, speed?!?!??!

I could tell ya' stories...............

Why don't you have your headlights on? They are on, they come on whenever the car comes on. Those are daytime running lights.............

Why are you driving with your highbeams on? These are the lights that CAME WITH THIS CAR.....

Why are you driving with your highbeams on? That little blue light came on on my dash, I don't know how to get it back off, it's really bugging me....................

When someone keeps following me with their high-beams on, I hit the skids and lock 'em up...you know, for that "dog that ran across the road".  I've put more than a couple cars in the ditch doing that.

I was driving rather slowly one night, with the girl i was dating at the time sitting beside me in the front seat, when some dude runs up and starts tailgating me.

I told the girl to hold on, I was going to slam on the brakes.

She went straight into the floorboard.

Dude took the hint and passed me.

That doesn't amke any sense.  You have high-beams in your face which is a real hazard, and it's illegal to just flash yours just as a "friendly reminder" that you're being blinded?  But then again, most laws don't make any sense anyhow.
As for me, someone behind me gets the "dog in the road" brake-light tap, oncoming cars get one flash, then a slight weave to the left with high-beams on if they don't turn them down.

almost all my driving at night is in the city/suburbs so I never get to use my high beams. And my high beams are really effective
what I like is when I have my lows on and people flash me like I have my highs on. Then they get to see what high beams really are

Finally readjusted my headlights last night... they're supposed to have those holes that you can stick a phillips down in and turn the adjustment screws.  According to the schematics from the manufacturer, my car should have those, and they should work.

WRONG...

They changed the position of the screws, and completely omitted the ones for the high beams.  I guess the adjustment is supposed to work on both.  Got 'em good.

BTW, I had installed PIAA 55w/100w bulbs in the low beams.  They are very bright, for sure.  Slightly whiter than the stock bulbs.

Installed Sylvania Silverstars in my fogs, and they are a bit whiter still, and also very bright.   I'd recommend them.  Search for them on Ebay, tho.  I got my pair for probably $17 cheaper than WalMart's price.

I've got two sets of fog lights mounted on the roll bar of my jeep aiming backwards. There used mainily when I'm shining hogs at night. Makes it real easy to feild dress the pigs in the dark that way.

Also comes in really fucking handy when someone starts tailgating or has his brights on behind me at night.
