It's rather complicated, but the division is the largest unit (other than army). A light division has about 10,000-11,000 troops. An armored division like the 1st AD or IstCav has about 17,000 troops. A mechanized division has around 17,400 troops.

In each division, there's generally 3-4 brigades. In  Mechanized divisions, you usually see 5 battalions of armor (tanks) and 5 battalions of mechanized infantry (Bradleys). In an armored division, you have 6 armor battalions and 4 mechanized infantry.

Light divisions generally have 3 brigades of light infantry. Each brigade has 3 battalions.

Then of course a division has all sorts of other support troops. They generally have aviation elements, division artillery (usually 3-4 battalions) signal battalion, forward support battalion/s, chemical companies, MP company, etc.

Each battalion is made up of (4?) companies and a headquarters section.

A platoon is made up of about 3 squads, plus a headquarters.

A squad is made up of two fire teams.

Now, as far as command, here is how it usually breaks down (though it can vary)

Division = Major General
Brigade = Colonel
Battalion = Lt. Colonel
Company = Captain
Platoon = lieutenant
squad = sgt

Of course you have majors, which often serve as the XO's to colonels. And 1st LT's often serve as the XO for captains, etc, etc.

I hope I have made some sense of this. It's very complicated and what I've mentioned isn't all telling, but a general guide to give you a good idea of how units are organized for battle.

Actually, you left out Corps, but as far as complicated goes, wait until we throw in UEy, UEx, and BUAs...  Then it gets complicated...
