Anybody else out there making back up copies of their movies? I was using dvdx copy, but it took a dump on me. I was curious what other programs are out there and what kind of luck people have had with them.
PS, I have 3 kids under age 9, so I back them up cause they tend to destroy them *legal disclaimer*

+1000

I still use DVD decrypter to rip the movie,
then Shrink to reauthor and resize it,
then Nero to burn.

I cut my teeth on an older version of Shrink that didn't rip the movie.
Since I was used to using DVDdecrypter, I still do it the same way.
But the newer versions of Shrink do everything but burn.

I use DVD Decrypter to rip, because it seems to be slightly faster than DVD Shrink. I then use DVD Shrink to get rid of all the menus, additional language audio/director's commentary, warnings, titles, extras, etc. I burn with Recordnow Max.

Only if he wants to make a svcd.

If he wants to make a DVD out of AVI and MPG files,

I've had good luck with tmpgenc.

But it is a major pain in the ass.

There may be easier software out now, as my last experiments were a couple of years ago.

Can also just backup the main title without all the extra crap.
Less, and sometimes no compression, that way.  Also movie just starts right up once loaded.

I've got little 'uns that trash the livin' out of the DVDs.  So yeah, I backed up all that stuff and they play the copies.  I haven't joined some Blockbuster/Netflix thing to collect movies or anything.  If I really like a movie, I get the original.  They enjoy the extras the first time, but for the 2nd, 3rd, 71st time watching Toy Story 2, they're just watching the movie.  Storage is much easier too, their DVD's are in a DVD binder..nice and tidy.  Even my three year old can recognize certain titles now...haha!

I've been using XCopy Express, which is quick and dirty...not real fancy.  321Studios is out of business now (lawsuits), so XCopy is no longer being developed/updated. At some point some DVD encryption method will go beyond what XCopy can do.  Also, after burning a lot of backups, my version of XCopy becomes unstable.  Reinstalling it seems to fix it for many more months.

I've been considering going to DVDShrink/Nero for awhile now...I need to dig in and crank out the process...

bump

I had dvdxcopy platinum, but it doesn't recognize my drive anymore, and the drive select doesn't work, even after several installs. I used DVD Shrink tonight for the 1st time. It did take alot longer to do, but the quality is very good!!!

Ancient history.

DVDShrink with Nero for 95% of everything out there.

DVD Encryptor for the other 5%.

DVDShrink for me.

The best website out the is Videohelp.com. It has info on anything digital video related. Conversion, ripping, encoding, players, burners, media, you name it. If you can't find it there, it probably doesn't exist. Check the "How To" section. I also like the reviews section for DVD players and DVD media - a very good resource before you buy.

I've also converted a ton of DV tapes using Ulead DVD Movie Factory.

I agree.  I can't for the life of me understand why some will use decrypter then shrink when shrink will do both jobs.  I have not actually timed it both ways but it is just so much easier to start shrink and then go do something else.
