Just picked up a Yugo M48. Everything appears in order, except that I can't get the cleaning rod out of its socket. Turning it seems to unscrew it in the middle (I assume that's what's happening, since the piece that comes out is only about 1/2- 2/3 the length of the barrel); pulling on it just makes my face red.

Is there a catch or spring or something I should be manipulating, or is the rod just really short? Thanks in advance for your assistance.

IIRC that is the length of the rod.  The idea was several soldiers would pool their rods and make one long enough to use.

That is all there is... The Squad had the rest that they shared.

Use a modern cleaning rod.

If you shoot Surplus it is most likely corrosive so clean with hot soapy water first.

This place never ceases to amaze me. Thanks.

FYI, the rifle is actually for my son's sweetheart's brother. He's 16. We took him shooting a few years ago, and he got bit hard. My son gave a Romanian .22 he won at an NRA banquet a year or 2 ago, and took him shooting a few times since then. The kid wanted a Schmidt-Rubin, but I had my son explain to him the cost of ammo over time and talk into going w/an 8mm Mauser. He is going to be tickled.

ETA: He paid for the rifle w/his own savings. I bought him some cleaning stuff, including corrosive bore cleaner. My son got him a bandolier of ammo on stripper clips.
