Are there any restrictions on shipping an upper to Iraq if it goes to an APO?

Any problems with customs?

As far as I know, an APO is considered a CONUS address.  I don't believe there are any restrictions.  I'll bump this up and maybe some more folks will chime in as well.

That is what I thought.  I sent one a long time ago and it never arrived.  When I spoke with the PM he asked if Customs had contacted us and that it was being held.

I was under the impression that since it was going to an APO that it was the same as shipping in the states.

I'm working here in Baghdad and use the APO system and have spoken to the folks there. You can in fact ship an upper receiver. Be sure to put "upper receiver" on the Customs Declaration form. I'd also make sure that it is packed in as stout a manner as is practical.

Be advised that this will probably be a one way trip for the upper.  Rifle parts, magazines, grips, buttstocks, fore ends, etc. are part of the forbidden items regarding being shipped from here. It's gotten so ridiculous that a knife with a blade length over six inches, i.e. the Khukri I bought from one of the Gurkhas can't be sent out. Although I think it's an overzealous Air Force puke reading more into the regs than he should that's the cause of that particular issue.

I hope this helps.

Any idea where I might find some documentation?  Any help would be apreciated.

That's a great question. I went online to try to find the regs and ended up e-mailing the USPS with my question. I received a non-answer that didn't help one bit. Our tax dollars at work. Hmph!

The last time I asked, one can ship those back via APO. Depending upon through which countries one is flying, putting them in checked baggage is also another option. I have an EOTech I purchased with my own funds here and plan on bringing it back to the States.

No problem with the uppers. I've had about a half dozen sent over here in Iraq and a couple to myself in when I was back in Germany. You can't mail it back (military rules, not USPS rules) but you can hand carry it back in your checked baggage.

If you make it through Baghdad International and either the airports in Amman, Jordan or Beirut, Lebanon with an upper receiver in your checked luggage, please let me know as I'm very interested in the viability of that.

I just had a friend of mine (civilian PSD) get detained and questioned at Kuwaiti International for having a collapsible butt stock, bolt carrier, flip up rear sight and other M4 parts in his checked baggage. They turned the parts over to the the US military and told him to retrieve it when he gets back from vacation.

The mailing restriction is a military restriction not US Postal restrictions.
