Ok, I looked around at some other places and could not find a satisfactory answer.  I friend of mine has a gas f250 SD 4x4 2001.  His wife has cancer, coming back from chemo yesterday his truck started making noise from the front axle/driveline.  Took it easy to get home, then brought the truck over to me.  If he would hit a rough patch on the road or those plastic reflectors that are placed between lanes, the truck makes a sound like a bad u-joint, then  stops.  It only seems to happen on the drivers side.  The truck has the auto/lock front hub system and the dial in 4x4, we could not get the 4x4 to engage when we tried it.  The driveshaft from the t-case to the front axle has some play as it comes out of the t-case right where the double u-joints are located.  I am thinking that the auto hub is engagaging when the truck hits anything other than smooth pavement and causing the front shaft to rotate.  Now comes the good part, I read that this system uses vacuum to engage the front hubs when the dial(on the axle) is placed on auto?  Somehow this doesn't sound right, I was under the impression that it worked the same way the older ford auto hubs worked, i.e. the axle turning inside the hub would catch with one way lock.  I really want to help him out , the local ford shop is more of a parts changing outfit than diagnostic if you  know what I mean.  Your help is greatly appreciated.
