OK, so I have decided that my first weapon next year will be an M1 Garand, and I have decided (with your help) to get a CMP Garand. Now I have another question. Since I live in Michigan, some have suggested going to the CMP North Store at Camp Perry for my Garand.

Has anyone ever done this? Is it as easy as it sound (drive there, bring the required docs, pick your garand, pay and take it home)? Are there any catches?

I've been there several times.  It's as easy as you've described.

Just have all of your paperwork in order.

As far a paperwork, I am thinking that I just need to take a birth certificate, my membership in a CMP affiliated organization and proof of marksmanship training (certificate from my CCW course). Is this all that I need? Do I have to fill out the CMP application and order form and all of that jazz?

IIRC, I had the order form filled-out prior to arriving, but it wound up that I didn't need it.

The whole thing was easier than I expected.

Why don't you give them a call before you leave?  (419) 635-2141

I wish I was that close.  I just ordered my 4th Garand from the CMP.

Call before you go and check on inventory.  I was there 3 weeks ago and the rifles, except the collector grade HRA, were picked over and ragged.    Bring you checkbook and be prepared to spend quite a bit of time looking.  It is a blast.
