Any recommendations for a 4-5 megapixel camera?  Going to get one for the wife for Christmas (this way I can post pics of my first AR I think she's getting me!).  I haven't got a clue as to what to look for, except (I've been told) at least 3X optical zoom and greater than 4 megapixels.

Thanks!

Nikon or Canon or Sony or ...

dpreview.com/ for all your digital imaging needs.

Edit: I have a Coolpix 950 (2.1 MP) 5700 (5 MP) cameras. Both are great cameras. The replacement for my camera is an 8 MP(!)

Go with a name brand- and look at the reviews on dpreview.com- seriously. You can download sample pics from the cameras you're interested in and compare them.

Nikon D70

6.1 megapixel, with interchangable lenses.  Very nice.  Runs around $1300 with the 18-70 zoom.

The canon powershot S500 looks nice for a point and shoot digital. The whole powershot line actually..

I have a Nikon CP5400 I like it alot for a prosumer camera but I'm about to upgrade to a Nikon D70 digital SLR.

The CP5400 is great for a P&S digital but does have a few drawbacks such as shutter lag and low light focus problems.

I have a lot of lenses for my Nikon F2 film SLR that will work fine on the D70 in manual mode.

I'm a Nikon guy I guess...

You want optical zoom, that's for sure.   Digital zoom sucks.  It ends up being the same thing as if you were looking at a picture on your computer and zoomed in.  It gets pixellated and looks crappy.   Now, at some seriously high resolutions, it might not be as bad.

Check out media.  Find out how much media costs for what you want to get.  Check out a few models and find reviews on them.  Some of the sites that review cameras are VERY informative.

Another vote for the Canon.  Go to a shop like Best Buy and play with a few, as well as the Sony's.  I found the navigation menu to change the settings the most intuitive on the Canons.  Yes, you can just leave it on Automatic all the time, but eventually you'll want to take more control of your shots.  Switch to Manual and you can set white balance, exposure, flash mode, etc.  This comes in handy when taking pics of your black rifles, which can be tricky.

Also, if you're willing to spend like $450 the sony DSC-P150 is really nice.

Uses the same chip as the canon powershot G6, but at a much lower price.

Thanks for all the tips.  I'll have to check out the review site.  I was planning to stay in the sub-$400 range, but if an extra $50 will give a big jump in quality, I'll look into it.  I should probably say this isn't intended for any single purpose, just your basic picture-taking.

Is there anything that you can't get an answer about on this forum?  This place is great!

Sony, Cannon, Nikon

All make excellent cameras.  Allso keep in mind the media used.  Sony used the Memory Stick,  Canon and Nikon uses SD memory cards.

I have a canon powershot A75 and love it.  I have a 512 mb card for it and can take 600 pictures and 30 minutes of video.

I love taking video with that thing.  I go parties and take video clips of everyone partying, etc.. and  clip them together with Windows Movie maker.

Bought it mainly for work in Florida assisting insurance co. assessing damage, etc...

Canon A95 - 5 Megapixel, 3X optical zoom. ~$290 online. Add a 512MB CompactFlash for ~$75.

Stay away from local chain stores. They will rape you over the $.

FYI BE CAREFUL (caps fully intended) with who you trust on line.

Camera stores for whatever reason have had more than their share of rip off artists... Back to the film days. And yes I speak from experience: I ordered the Coolpix 950 from a place in New York (with the best price) that said "Yes we have them in stock!" well guess what, they didn't have them in stock.

Add in the problems with "Grey market" cameras (cameras imported from other parts of the world- the camera companies will not honor the warranty on them) and you get a mess.

B&H has decent prices. There are some others that are decent as well.

Oh, I forgot. Check out www.digitalsecrets.net too.

I have an older Sony DSC 85 that has been great. The only drawback is that it is somewhat bulkier than some of the smaller offerings. If I did it again I would go as small as possible as to fit into your pocket. A camera is only useful if you carry it with you. Look at the Sony T-1. My mom just got one and it is awesome, and fits your criteria.
