I've got a 95 ranger with 4 liter and 5 speed tranny. Ever since I got the truck the clutch pedal has been extremely hard to depress. My dad(whos had knee surgery) can't drive the truck because he can't push the clutch. a couple days ago it started to get a little easier to depress, then while sitting in traffic the truck started moving forward on it's own. I stood on the brakes to get it to stop. I noticed that after that happened the spot where the clutch would engage was only about an inch off the floor, where previously it was 3-4 inches. Then this morning while backing out of the driveway the same thing happened. clutch was depressed but the truck wanted to keep moving. I am thinking that my clutch is going out, anyone have any other suggestions on this to check before I drop $200 on a new clutch, pressure plate.......

Have you checked the adjustment on the clutch?

Won't make it easier to depress but could give you some play like you are talking about if it got backed off over the years.

Well since you didnt give milage im just telling you what I would do. First determine if its mechanical or hydraulic, If it has a cable you might want to check the pulley and the adjustment ,if it is hydraulic check the fluid level if it is low it could mean a bad slave cylinder or bad line, check for fluid all along the length of the line if it is coming out of the bell housing it means that the slave cylinder is interior and you will have to pull the trans anyway.good luck

and I think this model has the internal slave cyclinder. I changed mine out in an 89 Ranger 4x4 and what a pain in the ass that was.

I'd rather eat broken glass.

If your clutch uses a cable which I think it does, with the vehicle out of gear and not running, set the parking brake and then put your foot under the pedal and pull up on the pedal.  Then depress the clutch.  It should click, try this a few times and it's supposed to adjust a little.  That's the way it does on late model Mustangs anyway.

It's not a cable clutch, it's hydraulic. I'm driving the same truck (for the most part).  Check to make sure you have fluid, if it's a little low add some.  You more than likely need a new slave cylinder, last time I got one it was around $35 (might have been with a discount).  They're a pain in the ass to bleed, it's worth paying someone to do it most of the time.

Good luck. BTW our trucks rule, but the tranny blows on them, I put in a Mustang T5 because of all the problems I've had.

I didn't even think about it being a hydraulic clutch.....DUHHHH!!!! I filled the reservoir up, it was pretty low. Will drive it in a little bit and see if that helps. Thanks for the replies.

This is the second 95 ranger that I have had, I love them. My previous one had a 4 cylinder and this one has the 4.0 6cyl. What a difference that makes!! The 4 banger would hardly pull itself up a hill without having to downshift. This one hauls ass compared to the other one.

This is my first ranger, have about 115k on it, the last 40k with a blower on it and the T5 tranny.  I love these trucks.  I need to give her some love with a paint job, but next is a pair of new seats (broke the lumbar).

Here's my engine compartment:
