| If you havent heard of absinthe, it is a strong-herbal liqueur distilled with wormwood and anise. Last night at a poker game we started talking about it. I need some help trying to settle an argument. They said that it was recently legalized, but I cant find any info about it. Is it legal in the US? |
|
It's regulated for import through the FDA. Customs can and may seize it for import. It's legal in Mexico, and you may bring it back for personal consumption per regular liquor specifications. But importing it is apparently the issue. I've not found any regulation that it is illegal for personal possession. |
| It isn't neccessarily illegal, but you're not supposed to import it, however if you bought it somewhere and brought it back with you, then you probably could have it. Customs might take it, they might not. I'm not sure how you would go about declaring something like that. I do know people that have had it shipped discretely from Germany, and the Czech Republic and have recieved it without a problem. Sugar and ice makes absinthe nice. |

It was made illegal in Europe in 1920. I don't think there ever was a problem with it in the US. Click on the link in my post above and then click on history. It was made legal to produce and ditribute again in 1981 and 1998...in Europe. You can buy it from the Alandia website with no problem. I have a bottle. I don't see what the big deal is with this stuff. It is not strong at all. |
|
The REAL stuff IS legal to purchase and have shipped to you for PERSONAL CONSUMPTION. I believe there's a limit of 1 bottle a month or something like that. However, I get mine shipped from Europe straight to me, and I've been told to keep the orders smallish and therefore less succeptible to scrutiny. It is NOT legal to ship it to your house and then sell it to someone else... |

i bought a bottle of absinthe at the local liquor store and its 110 Proff liquor that tastes like black licorice. This absinth is leagal in the US because it does not contain wormwood, the ingredient in the original absinth that made you halucinate. its some hard stuff to drink. |

It's legal to import one bottle at a time. The only reason it's illegal in europe is because of a link that was drawn between Absinthe and high suicide rates in the early 1800. This link is questionable though. The US never had that suicide problem, so we never really paid much attention to it. All that stuff about it being HIGHTLY ILLEGAL is just ways to romanticize that perticular Alcoholic drink. Kinda like Cuban Cigars. I'm NOT a lawyer though. |
According to the website, this stuff is the low-end of absinthe. It has 10mg thujon, where some of the others have 35mg of thujon. It would be interesting to know the effects of 35mg Absinthe. |
Yes, it's the real deal. But it's expensive. The FAQ on the site is incorrect though as the first site mentioned does have distilled absinthe with or without anise, with or without high levels of thujon, and is much cheaper. You must buy me a bottle so I may dispose of it properly.

Yup. Couple of my boys got ahold of this in portugal, only had a little bit according to them (both typical sailors, could polish off most of a 40 of whisky and not be drunk) and they were getting WIERD on it. Some of the boys brought a few bottles back. It was definitely made with wormwood, that I remember. I had some, not enough to get the full effects but it must be an aquired taste. Jagermeister tastes a lot better to me. ___________________________________________________ My pistol and rifle are merely TOOLS, I'M the weapon

The 'new' formulation isn't as bad, supposedly. The legal / illegal just makes it even more appealing to a bunch of poseurs. |
