I certainly don't want anything to do with Onstar. The idea of somebody else being able to deactivate my vehicle remotely is repugnant to me. I'm particularly sensitive to the issue right now as my tinfoil hat is in the shop for some much needed upgrades.

Now here is where I need some help from you guys who know their electronics. I've been looking at the new Jeep Cherokee and thinking that the onboard navigation system might be kinda handy. However, it seems to me that if the electrogizmotry can tell ME where I am, it can also tell any curious interloper where I am. True? Second; do these sort of systems (which I assume are sat based) have any "talk down" capability to screw with your vehicle operations?

Thanks in advance.

No, you use a GPS receiver, not a transmitter.

I went with a Garmin iQue 3600 which is a GPS/PDA. Receive only.

It's got the entire map of the whole country in it's 1 Gb memory. There's also room for a movie and hours worth of music if I reduce the installed maps to something more reasonable.

Your 911 enhansed cell phone allows "them" to track you.

No, a GPS is receive only.  For them to check your activities or position, they would have to have a channel to upload.  (cellular, RF,)

Thanks, guys!

Say Chief; Are those Garman hand-helds sophisticated enough for street navigation?
