Just curious.  Growing up in the South, all that I had ever eaten was cornbread dressing cooked in a pan and not "stuffed" in the turkey.  Then I met my wife who grew up in Philadelphia and she was just the opposite.....she always had stuffing.  Now, we do both and have dressing at either Christmas or Thanksgiving and then stuffing at the other.  I really like them both.  What about you guys and gals?

"Stuffing" is bread, herbs, spices, and other ingredients flavored with meat.

"Dressing" is oil, vinegar, herbs, spices, and other ingredients poured onto greens as a light sauce.

"Filling" is a catchall term for people who don't know this.

dressing. The last time we had a turkey was in '88. Living overseas makes it hard to get a turkey. It's always been ham instead.

Here in the south, we kinda warped the language to suit ourselves.

Sorry. It wasn't my idea.

But for most of us, 'dressing', in the chicken/turkey context, is cornbread, water, poultry, and spices and seasonings, such as sage, onion, and pepper, baked OUTSIDE of the bird, in a large pan.

As always, of course, the burnt edges are the best part.

When it comes to Turkey I use either term interchangably but usually I call it stuffing

stuffing but we make it seperately in a pot, not in the bird, we also add a few extra ingredients like fresh mushrooms, onions, etc.

Stuffing.  It's what i'm going to miss the most this Thanksgiving, being in texas.  They serve a nasty corny mush called "dressing" here.

"Get both" is always good advice.

I have always called it "stuffing" and my wife (from Oklahoma) calls it "dressing".  We do stuff the bird.  My mom always made bread crumb stuffing and her husband preferrs Cornbread stuffing.
My mom stuffs a turkey and Ross stuffs a chicken.  If there is more than will fit in the birds we bake it in a pan in the oven, but the stuff in the bird is better tasting.  Amen to the part about adding veggies to the stuffing.
I like
Onion
Celery
Mushroom

We always called it Stuffing (or filling), and stuffed the bird with it. But there was always extra that was baked in a pan in the oven, we called it stuffing as well.

Both, stuff the bird with stuffing, anything left over, set it aside, after the bird comes out, drizzle some stock over the dressing and bake that, just in case you run out of stuffing, which is very popular in my house. Tomorrow, we'll have 20+ for dinner. We'll have both, and more than one bird.

Yankees!  There's Yankees amongst us!

Dressing is something to be admired and enjoyed. The English language has many words with multiple meanings including this one. Cornbread dressing is made with boiled eggs, stock from the turkey, thyme, sage and other secret ingredients and baked.  It's the only thing to eat with turkey. Mix it, turkey meat, giblet gravy and a top with cranberry sauce.  Don't get much better than that.
