Have a 40gb ipod and it's awesome.  I can get over 8 hours of play out of it if I just hit GO and don't touch it.
You will need USB 2.0 or firewire ( 6 pin ) though.  I also highly recommend "copypod" which allows you to pull songs off of other ipods.

I got a few different cases and things for it.  The plastic sleeves work well.  I've dropped it once while playing, fell 30" off of a counter and it's fine.   Best price I've seen was on-post but amazon.com has them cheap as well.

I have the 20gb.  I love it, definately some of the best money I've ever spent on an electronic device.  I use it pretty much constantly, and it has totally replaced my need for CDs really, if I do buy a CD, I just copy it to the iPod, and put the CD away probably never to be used again.  You can use the iPod just about anywhere, including your car if you get an FM Transmitter.  I have the Belkin Tune Cast II, which I recommend because you can broadcast anywhere on the FM band, many transmitters limit you to 4 frequencies or so, and often all of those frequencies are already dedicated to other radio stations in big cities, making your transmitter worthless.  The newest iPods are great since they have 12hr battery life and cheaper, opposed to 6-8 in the one I have, but I've never had a problem with it really.  Highly recommended, you won't reget dropping $500 or so when you go to buy it and any accessories you may want.

ETA:  It really pays of when travelling.  I bought mine specifically for my trip to Europe this last summer.  There was no way I was going to haul along my giant archive of CDs.  Also, never again will you have to go digging into your bag under the seat infront of you to change the CDs in your CD player.  So it just saves so much space and hastle while traveling.

I have just a 10MB one and love it.  Add and iTrip and leave your CD's at home!!!! I got my wife one of the bag/purse things with speakers  and turns it into a "boom box".  We use it at the pool, beach, and on the boat.

Get one.

An IPOD is essentially a hard drive, therefore, it is somewhat liable to file or drive corruption when encountering excessive movement or shock. IPODs are great for any individual that wants to transport a huge amount of songs but isn't going to be doing any running or fast movement. FLASH memory, a different type of information storing hardware, is much better for an individual not as concerned about transporting 20 CDs with them on one device and is more interested in using the device for jogging, running, etc. FLASH doesn't store as much information for the same price as a traditional IPOD H.D., but it is more reliable in times of shock and movement.

can you only put mp3s on them?  i can hear the bits getting chopped off on mp3 files and it drives me crazy.  i used to never hear it, but a friend pointed it out to me and it's all i hear now.  can they handle .wav files or are you limited to mp3?

I got the 20 gb HP Ipod.  Just an Ipod HP was licensed to make, but identical to the Ipod.

Really awesome for trips (as another guy mentioned, get an FM transmitter, and you can
play it in your car) and for the gym.

A little pricey at $299, but I can take 400 albums worth of music everywhere I go.

The only downside is, I had to spend many hours with the Itunes s/w renaming my files
to be compatible with the Ipod.   The Ipod doesn't care what the filenames are, it looks
for extended file info, and if you ripped alot of songs from CD's with older s/w, like I did,
that extended file info doesn't exist, so you wind up importing all your songs and seeing
a ton of blanks, but when you click on them in Itunes, they play.   That's the only downside,
but the Itunes s/w is pretty intuitive, so the 8 or so hours I spent renaming about 13 Gb
of songs, was just tiring, not tough to do though.

I bought the first-gen 5Gb iPod for my wife, then later bought the iPod mini.

Haven't had any trouble with the battery in the first-gen iPod even though apparently complaints are rampant.  The iPod mini has been a joy to use.  Both units are still in use and I'd recommend the iPod to anyone.  Solid product.  Plug and play (literally).  I looked at some flash memory players but the capacity just wasn't there, for the amount of money you end up paying.
