Well this is a huge grey area.

Some things i don't understand:

It is legal for someone under 21 and above 18 to buy a handgun on a private sale, but it is not legal for someone that is 18 to buy a handgun from a dealer.

why is that?

Also, it is legal to buy handgun ammo on a private sale for 18 to 20 yr olds, but not legal to buy from an FFL.

what is to say that i am shooting a 9 mm AR, and not a handgun?

What is to say that i am shooting my lever action .44 mag, and not a handgun in .44 mag?

I guess i don't understand why it is legal for those under 21 to buy through a private sale.

Why don't they just make it one or the other?

am i missing something here?

Exactly.

Either way you're screwed if they catch your ass.

This is so stupid.

honestly, if they don't want anyone under 21 to own a handgun, then why don't they just make a law that states that.

And another thing.

How do the decifer between someone buying a handgun to sell to a minor, and someone who just decides to sell a handgun to a minor?

this is FUBAR.

I used to have that problem with my 9MM AR, I would run into problems getting ammo.

That handgun thing doesnt make sense

Old enough to serve...old enough to be served...old enough to serve....old enough to own a handgun. Thats how the law would read if it were up to me. Unfortunately...its not up to me.

Simple answer:

Politics.

Why did the AWB include a grandfather clause?

So they could pass the bill.

Carving out exceptions to proposed laws makes voting for that law more palatable for some politicians on the fence.

That way they can go back to the people at home and say "sure, I voted to restrict handgun sales to 21 year olds, but I made sure it was possible for parents to still give a handgun to their children if they want to. See, I'm not anti-gun!"

Slightly off topic ......... But

Looking back in my life , the time between 18 and 21 seems to be about four and half minutes .

Trust an old fart , don't be in a hurry to rush your life . It passes more then fast enough
as it is

not worried about that.

Its more of the political bull shit that bothers me.

If the gubmint says i can't drink a beer, then i won't. If the gubmint says i can't go into a dealer and buy a handgun or handgun ammo, then i won't and can't really.

Political bull shit.

and believe me, i am in now hurry to grow up. i like where im at.

I was under the impression that anyone over the age of 18 could legally purchase any legally obtainable firearm.

So you gotta be 21 for handguns and NFA weapons?
Interesting.  But if its a problem just get your parents to make a straw man purchase for you :D

I had and have a good rappore with my gun monger.  I bought my first pistol through private party, a Witness 10mm (big mistake for a first pistol).  They sold me practice ammo without question.

I guess they didnt see a poor college student buying shoot-n-see targets and a box or two of Blazer or PMC at $18 a pop to be a threat.

Dont forget most states require you to be 21 for CHL.

Something that got me to laugh was hearing about this 17 year old Infantryman who was not allowed into an R-rated movie.
