I was reading this Yahoo article and wondering how the media came up with only 54 Republican seats.  The answer came two paragraphs later.

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=514&u=/ap/20041103/ap_on_el_se/eln_senate

Republicans were assured 54 Senate seats, expanding their current 51-48 margin, with one Democratic-leaning independent.
...
Democrats hoped for a defection to ease the pain. Rhode Island Sen. Lincoln Chafee said he would consider switching parties if President Bush (news - web sites) were re-elected.

"I'm not ruling it out," Chafee told The Providence Journal. Known for moderate views that often run counter to the Bush administration, Chafee said he cast a write-in vote for Bush's father, George H.W. Bush, in Tuesday's election, calling it a "symbolic protest."

So is the fucking traitor vermin finally going to admit that he's a RINO scum?  He and Jeffords deserve to be ass-buddies with each other, but I don't see what the Dems could offer the little weasel.  Then again, considering how he's voted in the past, I don't see why the Republicans would give him any seat higher than Minority Party Toilet Scrubber.

We don't really count on Chaffee for much anyway.  I expect that the senator won't switch since the reaction will be a collective yawn.  An attention whore will maximize his impact.  Leaving the R party now will not change anything.  Jeffords had it right, in a way.  At least his jumping changed something.

That would be kinda like your pet rattlesnake running away from home.

Let the Democrats handle that snake.

Yeah, that's what I don't get.  Chaffee has long been socialist trash, just like his father before him.  But if Frist or anyone else on the R side is paying attention, Chaffee won't get so much as a toilet-wiping position now.  And I don't see what the D's can offer him that would benefit him.

Oh well.  Whatever.  Just means six more to go before the R's can reliably break filibusters.  It'll be a few more elections. . . .

It wouldn't make sense for him to defect.

The Jeffords defection was a "Balance of power" play. He was wooed by promises, which alas, yielded nothing (big surprise!)

Chaffee would be a pariaha....and get nothing for it.

I say, go ahead and switch:

He didn't vote with the party, so "give him the boot"!

I'd like to hear that the Party ASKS HIM TO SWITCH!

Screw him...GUNGRABBER!

So if he goes, he joins the party of the LOSERS!  Once in the minority, he gets fucking NOTHING!

So go ahead asshole...do it.  See how much you like being in the minority.  Have a care though.  Quite often decisions like this one come back to haunt one.

switching parties should cause you to get booted out of office and a new election held where you can run under the new party

There are a lot of perks if you don't constantly shaft your party. I don't think Chaffee gets much from the Republicans... maybe he is trying to see if the Dems will offer him anything special?
