This year it's the Yankees who are choking instead of the Sox.

Not yet, the Yankees still have half an inning. |

Fat Lady is warming up...but not singing yet |
Shit, my Tivo is recording Lost for my wife. Somebody give me the play by play!
Its over... congrats Sox... you guys deserve it... but I'm still cheering against you because a Sox win helps Kerry.
I don't care if the Sox win. But 20 bucks says if they do, Kerry will use it in some political way...
Ditto. A truly brilliant performance. One for the history books. Wow. |
The ONLY time I've ever rooted for the Mets was when they played Boston in 1986! |
are you fucking serious? are some of you guys this fucking nutty? |
But if it ends up a Boston v. Houston in the World Series... |
Nah.... Actually, I'm surprised by what I saw last night. That had never happened that I knew of. Hell, most people are already leaving to beat the traffic. I know because I've been there, and getting out of Yankee Stadium takes an hour plus. |

Do you understand anything about politics and campaigning? Images are everything. Kerry has always been known as the comeback kid... The Red Sox just did something never before done in Baseball... come back from 3 down to WIN! You're damn straight he will use this. The Pats won the superbowl... if the Red Sox win the Series Kerry will be calling for a Hat Trick for Boston. Yeah, he will use it. We can hope for an Astros/Sox series, but if the Sox win that he will say its time for a rematch at the polls. And as stupid as it sounds, that kind of optimism and imagery does tend to resonate with some people... scary huh? The Yanks not in the Series also deprives the president of appearing at Yankee Stadium with Bloomberg, Pataki and Guiliani... which penetrates the NJ and PA local media markets... nevermind the national coverage, of the three 9-11 "Heroes" together... Heroes in the sense of providing leadership. |

If the Red Sox winning can change the presidential race, then we are fucked anyway. I still hate the fucking Yankees and Steinbrenner. |
What amazes me about all these "Sox fans" are you are cheering the Yankee loss more than the Boston win... kinda like those folks that are voting Anybody But Bush...
Every single fucking thread in this fucking forum turns into a presidential debate. jesus tittyfucking christ
As noted in another thread, based on your logic, this will allow GW to carry NY. |
Yeah... because baseball is a nice distraction, but has no real effect on your lives. You can bet your fucking ass that the presidential election does and Kerry is a threat to everything we hold dear.
And they have nothing to do with each other. Admit it, you are just upset that the Yankees lost. |
... I hate to crap on an otherwise HAPPY thread but HiramRanger is absoFUCKINGlutley correct here. Sports are fuck compared to our real-life future |
Noooooooooooooo....... not sure how you arrive at that. I am making the observation that we all think people who vote for Kerry simply because they hate Bush are stupid... kind of like cheering for a team simply because they are not the Yankees. |
how dare you, socialist |
Your previous long post gave us all the reasons that the Red Sox winning will help Kerry. Based on the same logic, now New Yorkers will vote for Bush because of the baseball game. |
Sir, I'm already over the loss. Its a game. It is enjoyable to watch, frustrating at times... But its a game. I wake up tomorrow and my co-workers and I will laugh at it... but season is over for our guys. We move on. If we lose the election, will you wake up on November 3... or whenever the battles are done... and say oh well, we lost... We'll get them next season? Or will you be worried about what will happen to your rights for the next 4-8 years? And once again, you can bet your sweet ass Kerry will make hay out of this and he will take every chance to get his mug on tv talking about the Red Sox being the comeback kids... and how just last month they were 16 points down (nevermind they argued that they really weren't) and Kerry/Edwards will be the comeback kids! Its powerful imagery, and right now imagery is extremely important. |
My God, a baseball thread has now become a political discussion? Can't some of you guys give your political rants a break? It would be nice if we could have just one thread that did not become a political soap box. Its just baseball!
Boston, of course...the Yankees choked it big time! |
Goddamnit, they have nothing to do with each other. Like I already said, if this determines the presidential race, we are fucked royally. It is irrelevant to the presidential race and no amount of twisted logic can make it so. I guess I am now supposed to get upset at the Yankees losing because of what you say?? Not hardly, I am so fucking glad the Yankees lost and I am happy for the Red Sox for they deserved a break. |
That's the understatement of the year! |
Seriously Larry... do you know how to read? What I said was,
I did not say people would ultimately vote on that issue alone, but it allows him to paint a picture and give the campaign an optimistic message... coming from behind, realizing dreams, never give up hope... It is an energizing message. Why do you think the president had the Olympic team at the White House this week rather than last month? The event was timed for optimal exposure and to remind people of the American spirit and victory at a time when we are fighting a long and drawn out war. Really, learn something about political imagery and how campaigns use it to motivate their base and to craft a message. And sports have always played a major role in this because we all understand the basic concept of winning and losing. |
... Nope ... StL will win this year (ETA - I read Series) |
LOL, the Yankees sucked big time... they were pwned! Boston deserved and EARNED their win. While I am not happy for them, I respect the shit out of them for what they accomplished.
Political imagery, my ass! Get over it, your fucking Yankees lost! Like someone said, this is not a political thread. The fucking Yankees losing is not going to help Kerry. Political imagery is for losers and if the resulting political imagery would affect the vote in any way, we are screwed. Yeah, that would be scary. You basically said we could get over a baseball game, but the resulting win for Kerry, we could not get over. The fucking Yankees lost and it is a damn good thing. Yes, I know how to read, but I also know how to recognize twisted logic (bullshit) when I see it. |

Thanks Larry and when you are paid for your political advice I'll take it over my personal experience having worked a number of campaigns, speech writing, ad development, opposition research, rally and event planning, fund raising, transition teams...
I don't give a flying shit that the Yankees lost from the perspective of a fan. Shit, I grew up in Syracuse during an era when the fan's mantra was you can't spell sucks without SU. Its a game, I'm looking at it from a non-fan perspective. You are the one wrapped up in it as a way of life apparently. Everything right now matters, I'm sorry your intellect is not keen enough to see this is an image to be used. And anybody who thinks campaigns are not about image is showing just how clueless they are. Please, go on and educate me about my job. This is thoroughly entertaining. ETA... while I disagree with most of what you say, I think it is incredibly sad that anybody might allow something like sports imagery to effect their decision... but there are people who will... just as there are people that will allow somebody's height, or hair or any other image issue to make their decision or influence it. |
