yes or no? It seems this is a southern thing. I love them. I can't find many people who like 'em. I was so happy to learn about a local hardware store carries 10 lbs pre-cooked bags. A few other officers didn't even know what they were.

The idea of boiled peanuts seemed a bit weird to me (I guess it must be a southern thing), but Taxman got me hooked at Bulletfest.  Pretty good stuff.

The best are the small spanish peanuts where there are typically 3-4 nuts per shell. The jumbo mexican peanuts are the worst for boiling. Also, you have to use green peanuts that are harvested after 100 days. If they are too old, they are poor for boiling. In addition, they must be boiled for a few hours, then allowed to soak until cool so that they absorb the salt water, then reheated. It's a bit of a science for a quality boiled peanut and if not done right, they won't be palatable.

I'm gonna show my ignorance here (take one for the team of use non-Southern guys), but what the hell are boiled peanuts?  Is it just like it sounds?  Peanuts that have been boiled in water?

1) What are they?
2) What do they taste like?

Boiled in very salty water, and they are goooooood. I hate roasted peanuts. I hate peanut butter. I love boiled peanuts. They taste sort of like salty beef - that's not 100% accurate (but then what do carrots "taste like?") but I think it's pretty close.

The only drawback is, if you eat them while driving, having bought them at a roadside stand, you will dribble near-boiling water on your chin, wrist, and chest, and swerve all over the road while screeching in pain, risking death or dismemberment in a hideous wreck. It's worth it, though.

1- yes, just like it sounds. Boiled in salted water.
2- They taste like peanuts, silly! Consistency of a cooked bean.

ok take a hard shell peanut. Like you would get a ball game or circus. Boil  with salted water  until they are soft. Hmm they taste like a soft salty warm peanut. When you crack 'em open they  are full of warm salty water. they're a little messy but damn they are good.

How?  Just buy a bag of peanuts and boil them in salted water?  How much salt and for how long do they need to boil?

10/19/2004 3:37:11 PM EDT
[#26]
boil for about 8hours on a slow rolling boil. I use rock salt. As for hown much salt? wing it. you want the initial boil pretty heavy with salt. after about 4-5 hours i change the water and use a bit less slat to take the edge off them. I'd guess i use about 1/2 box in a 3 gallon pot with 2 lbs of peanuts.

try them when they are close to getting soft. too salty dump water and boil without salt. not salty enough add and continue the boil. It's REALLLLLY hard to screw them up.

Use an OLD pot as the crud from the peanuts and the salt evaporation will make a bit of a mess.

mike

ps.... USE RAW PEANUTS

I had heard about boiled peanuts, but they do not sell them where I live.  A few years ago I was in Georgia on a business trip and I saw the canned version in a grocery store.  I bought a can and gave 'em a try.  They tasted terrible.  The next day I saw a guy selling some hot boiled peanuts outside a store.  I bought some and I thought they were great!

Hell yeah, boy! I like me some boiled peanuts, although some people just make them too salty. They are hard to beat in my opinion.

They are redneck crack.I just boiled a whole bushel this weekend for the family,in laws, neighbors.

My Recipe......
10 -15 gal container
1/2 bushel raw/green peanuts
2 big red onions
2 1/2 containers of salt
2 cloves of garlic

If you want to make Cajun(the best) also add 15 or 20 hot peppers.I know that sounds like a lot but it's really not when you're diluting it in 10 gals of water. And I mean real hot peppers, not jalepeno's.

Slowly boil for 4 hours.Turn off heat, let sit overnite to soak up juices/salt then boil slowly for 4 hours the next day and presto you have boiled peanuts.(Or Hell, just boil them for 8 hours straight and be done with it.)

Also, you have to get RAW,GREEN peanuts, not just RAW.Just plain raw peanuts will not be green but will be dried out and you can boil them till judgement day and never get them soft.

Experiment,it's really hard to mess them up.I can't tell you how many damn yank...,I mean northern brothers I've turned on to these that are now addicted.

Yummy. I just had them a few weeks back. We don't have them in California, so a gentleman from Florida bought some "green" pea nuts for me which were being sold at the Thursday Farmer's Market in Westwood near UCLA, and he boiled them for me.

I have heard about boiled peanuts and RC. I think it's a NC, South Carolina, Georgia thing? What do you exactly do with the RC? Just to wash the peanuts down with or do you put the peanuts in the RC?

I have risked my life many times for a good bag 'o boiled p-nutz! ummmmmm!

We just can't get to the beach and back without a car load of peanut hulls rolling around in the floorboards. The hard part is juggling your nuts and sack while holding an ice cold Blenhiem's Ginger Ale between your legs.

Here in NC it's one frosty bottle of Pepsi, one pack of Tom's salted peanuts, drink down the Pepsi, a couple of gulps works, and pour in the nuts. Enjoy! Finish off the nuts and Pepsi at the same time. Ummm! A six ounce bottle of Coke is good also.

I would cheerfully eat them until I exploded!
Then you could bury me with a bag under each arm!
