What is the purpose of the hose that attaches to the side of the fire truck while it’s in the station that detaches from the truck as the truck is pulling out of the station on an emergency call?  The hose looks like it's articulated and is mounted to the fire hose ceiling.

It's a duct system designed to catch the diesel exhaust form the rigs. We had them in all our houses but went to a "no smoke" system. Each rig has its own filter that is activated while pulling into or out of the bay.

Yep, a diesel exhaust system to keep the fumes out of the bay.
