many of my favorites have been mentioned. When I try and think of the greatest one of all time I have to ignore most of the newer ones (SPR, BHD, WWS, Platoon, FMJ) I love em but I don't if its the technology or the movie that makes it good.
If I had to pick ONE best... The Longest Day one that hasn't been mentioned and I need to because I loved it.... The Green Berets ETA: I have to mention not only Band of Brothers, but Hamburger Hill because they are about the Currahee after all |

Someone said "Zulu"
Certainly, it has all the elements to make a great story. Zulu is the story of Rorke's Drift The largest number of Victoria Crosses awarded to a regiment for one action. This action was at Rorke's Drift, Wednesday 22- Thursday 23 January, 1879, when some 150 soldiers defended a supply station against some 4000 Zulus, aided by the Martini-Henry rifle 'with some guts behind it'. But the movie takes quite a few "liberties" with the actual history. Here is a GREAT British website that critiques the movie: www.rorkesdriftvc.com/zulu.htm Now my list of the Best War Movies {in order of the most historical accuracy} (1) Das Boot (2) A Bridge Too Far (3) Tora Tora Tora (4) Blackhawk Down Close behind, somewhat historically accurate, but the screenplay takes liberties, (5) Saving Private Ryan (6) The Bridge at Remagen Very Accurate as to equipment (7) Strategic Air Command {Great live footage of B-36 Peacemaker and Boeing B-47 Stratojet} {The star, Jimmy Stewart, was an actual B-24 Liberator pilot in WWII and at the time of the movie, he was a colonel in the U.S. Army Air Forces Reserve, He was promoted to brigadier general in 1959 and retired from the U.S. Air Force Reserve in 1968} (8) Kelly's Heros Tongue in cheek action/adventure, but all the equipment was true to actual WWII issue.} |

"A bridge too far".
That was the first non-kids movie my father and I went to. I still love it. "Midway" was also great. And HBO's "When trumpets fade" And who could forget this line "Never get out of the boat" from Apocolypse Now. |
"Period" war movie? The Patriot
"Modern" war movie? We Were Soldiers (No, it's not that I'm a huge Mel Gibson fan... but those are two of my very favorite movies, let alone war movies.) |
Not in order
Patton Tora Tora Tora Sands of Iwo Jima Where Eagles Dare Zulu Das Boot Where Eagles Dare Sahara Larence of Arabia Big Red One And: Memphis Bell The Great Escape Not quite in the class of the above, but I like Red Dawn |
Where soars the Silver Surfer, there must he soar... alone. |
Band of Brothers
It's a movie. It's 10 hours because it stayed true to the book, but it's still a movie. |
The Longest Day
Band Of Brothers Blackhawk Down We Were Soldiers Saving Private Ryan A Walk In the Sun No Paricular order |
BATTLEGROUND. Hands down.
Where Saving Private Ryan made up a fake mission and people, Battleground had many of the actual members of the 101st who were at the Battle of the Bulge. (Not as stars, but extras) |
God God.. it had to go down as far as Page 3 before someone mentioned A Bridge Too Far?
I like movies which simply tell the story of what happened, without political commentary and without Hollywood tripe. Saving Private Ryan was great for a half hour, then degenerated. Zulu, BHD, Gettysburg, ABTF, We Were Soldiers all qualify. NTM |
No particular order.
The Winter War. A Bridge too far Cross of Iron Zulu The Longest Day All Quiet on the Western Front The Bridge. |
+1 ETA anyone ever seen "A Walk In the Sun"? Its an obscure movie but quite good. |
Another Platoon vote here, Saving Private Ryan and We Were Soldiers are running a close second...
+1 My favorite "B" grade war movie: The Siege of Firebase Gloria. |
When those German M-48's come over the hill, "Patton" loses too many points with me.
I am partial to Eastern Front WWII movies, so I like "Cross Of Iron" and "Enemy At The Gates". |
apocalypse now,
fmj, the thin red line, saving private ryan.... all good... |
Only two mentions of Apocolypse Now? For real fans, see "A Film Makers Apocalypse", documentary by FFC's wife on the process of making the picture.
How about: Salvador 84 Charlie MoPic Anyone seen those? |
Thin Red line... my god, the worst POS ever put on film. After 2 1/2 hours I looked over at my dad and asked if there was a church nearby so I could go pray the movie would end. |

A Bridge Too Far Patton Blackhawk Down Twelve O'Clock High Just to name a few..... |
