My friend and I were out shooting our AR-15's and he had his new Bushmaster.  His gun was firing but when the bolt came back to shove another round in the chamber, it would not catch the bullet, the bolt would just go forward.  He had to pull back the charging handle to load another round, then he would shoot it and the same thing would happen again.  I had my AR-15, so we started switching parts. We finally found out what was wrong.  Can any of you brains tell me what was wrong?????  I will post the answer later.

Every problem can be figured out by reviewing the 8 cycles of function

1. Feeding
2. Chambering
3. Locking
4. Firing
5. Unlocking
6. Extracting
7. Ejecting
8. Cocking

He had a feeding problem.  Check the magazine or the magazine catch.

the ammo he was shooting was short stroking by not having enough powder to move the bolt all the way back for it to strip a new cartridge from the mag

I had the same thing happen to mine. Brand new, wouldn't feed, wouldn't stay open on the last shot. It turned out that the gas tube was slightly bent. That my 2 cents.

gas problem - underpowered ammo not having enough gas to push it back, or the recoil spring is for a different caliber and was stronger than the .223 was designed for?

Had the same problem, mine was a gas problem, I was shooting a regular buffer out of a 11 inch barrel and just too much, my wife says I have too much gas to

Holy crap.  I would think that if there is enough gas to push the bullet out of the muzzle there would be enough to blow the bolt back.

We switched every part that we could think of, when we put my buffer in his gun, it cured the problem.  He went and bought a new buffer and has had no problem since, not sure what was wrong with his, they both looked the same.  Thanks for your replies.

Edit: Just had a similar problem the other day.  You probably have a ligher buffer that was replaced with a heavy one when you had the problem.  The heavy buffer slows the recoiling bolt carrier assembly to the point that it fails to travel rearward far enough to clear the rear end of the next round, thus a "bolt over" results.

Were the unchambered rounds dented by the bolt?  That would confirm the diagnosis.

The far end of the bolt release/lock comes up and is caught between the far rail (underside) of the bolt.
Rounding off of that edge of the release/lock will remedy that problem.

Mag's in upside down.  I do it all the time.  Matter of fact, I've painted big arrows on all my mags along with "Remember!  Bullet side UP!"
