I'm standing inside a photolithography workcell cluster with a small industrial robot in the center. The robot moves silicon wafers around the cell and to the stepper to print the wafer. Wafers go in and when they come out they have a new pattern on them that is ready to be etched on. After this happens a dozen or more times, with a lot of other steps in between, the wafers are ready to be cut into individual dies and packaged into a computer chip. This is an older workcell, about as old as me.

here is an individual die that has already been cut from a wafer and mounting in the packaging.

here is a fully packaged integrated circuit ready to be mounted on a board

We'll, mine looks a lot like that too a lot of the time, except not as neat and clean.

Are you a fan of Odyssey 5, on Showtime?

Clean room huh. I'll guess a class 10 maybe (meaning very clean with only 10 ppm vs a normal room with 1 ka billion ppm give or take). My work might supply you with seals in any harsh chemical processes.

I am O-ring man !!!!

Are you hiring interns?

Never watched Odyssey 5.

Actually, it's a class 100. We don't run much sub-micron so we get away with it. We use a ton of different o-rings, so I'm sure we probably use some from you. Last year we manufactured the most square inches of printed silicon of any fab in the world, so we use a lot of everything.

Not hiring right now....the market isn't real strong. Probably not a lot of hiring going on until next year.

Yep, I'm afraid so. This stuff pays the bills and then some. The upside is that I get off for Thanksgiving and Christmas this year. Still, I'd rather go to Gunstock, but I could be worse off like some of the unemployed members of the board. So I won't complain too much.
