So the Civil air patrol is switching from ABUs to the OCP multicam  style uniforms. The new uniform requires them to wear coyote brown or Tan499 t shirts vs the old desert sand they currently wear.

I can buy new shirts, but some cadets come from financially challenged homes. I was thinking I have boxes of the desert tan shirts, If I could dye them to the correct color I could save them money.

They have three years to make the switch, but for those that want to change I could make them some correct color shirts.

My question is would this be worth the effort? And if so what color dye to use? Looked on the internet and got a guess for the coyote brown but not tan499.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Three for $23, not a big deal for my family.

A few kids I have had to buy field gear etc to do search and rescue overnight events.

Just trying to take these new shirts that will be obsolete in three years and make them useful. Juice may not be worth the squeeze and why I am asking.

The OCPs and Boots will hurt - just one set of complete uniform will run over $200 new at Clothing Sales. Might be time for a fund raiser or donations from some vets.

I have some experience with rit dye. You can make the desert sand into the coyote brown. Have to experiment a bit, but it should match well enough.

Im not sure if this one would work but I'd love to try. The jokes would be worth it.

The more synthetic content, the less it takes the dye.

100% cotton dyes well, 50% Cotton / 50% polyester not so much.

I don't think it will work well and not be worth the expense/effort.

Local place had used OCPs for $16 a set. Luckily not to my Small regular sized folks buying so we scored a few sets.

Boots best price new is $109 and found my son a set of used Nike coyote boots for $35.

Most family's can afford the new stuff, it's just some I don't want feeling bad as they can afford new uniforms.

Another place has used OCPs for $60 a set, these are in decent shape. We have three years to make the change, trying to start now.

You might be right, never fooled with fabric dye.

I have some first-issue multicam OCPs that I would part with if they go to a good home, small tops and small bottoms.

This. I doubt my M-XXL will fit many middle schoolers but I have probably ten sets from three deployments with the tags still on. Send a PM if you want one or two. They're the older style with pocket flaps, so not sure what CAP's regs say, but happy to share a little.

Also, I'm sure there are several hundred tan 499 t-shirts taking up space in drawers that users would be happy to donate.

Cheaper and easier to just buy the correct shirts

Tell me about it…. New CAP uniform shopping on Saturday. Plus boots, it was an expensive day! Dress blues tonight though, some sort of guest speaker.

Yeah I don't know dying them might be pretty time consuming and hitting just the right shade might not be possible without a lot of experimentation.

I guess I'd just give them the shirts as-is and if T shirts survive 3 years of regular use, that's a pretty good run anyway.

Between me and my wife (both former Army)  we have a bunch of tan shirts for use with OCP's.  Ranging from L-M's  if you're interested, they're collecting dust in duffle bags from our ETS.    If you pay shipping you can have them.

Thanks for the offer my friend.

My son is one of the biggest cadets and he wears a small long. Just about all of my cadets fall into the small long to small xtra short category.

local shop said he gets lots of small OCPs that rarely sell, he said he would call during his next resupply. Cadets have three years to make the switch so no big hurry.

If you have AFB access, check the Airman’s Attic. Usually have a lot of left behind or mustering out uniforms, including t-shirts, that are free to legit users like other airmen and CAP units.

Used to keep our cadet squadron stocked in free uniforms from woodland camo to dress blues and jackets from MacDill, Patrick and Eglin AFB.

For a cadet, three years is half a lifetime. T-shirts should be an item most squadrons should be able to acquire via fundraising.

Are they light desert tan or the tan499 or coyote color?

We have a box's of the light desert tan ones, but those are the ones they can't wear anymore.

Yea we are planning a trip to Shaw and Ft Jackson. Thing is local CAP squadrons hit those places pretty hard though.

I have a bunch of bright white shirts I got for free over the years as promotional items and I hate white shirts.

I have thought several times about buying Rit dye and making them tan or gray but synthetic material really needs boiling water and I don't have a junk pot big enough to ruin with dye.

What color dye did you use? Normal coyote brown or some special combo?

No need to dye the old shirts.
