In Minnesota, you walk into the police station, tell them you need the paperwork to buy a hand gun and the clerk hands you a packet of forms to be filled out. You get the permit in seven days. |

Uh just goto the local sheriff's office and apply would be the first step.
Once you get this you will not longer have to to the NICS check within Iowa for a purchase |

odds are you should not tell the Sherriff that you want it for protection. Tell him you trap, or target shoot a lot and need to carry it from point to point. If you say protection, odds are good it will be denied.

Just go to your local sheriff office and fill out an app. They will not (nor can not ask why). In Linn county the cost is five bucks. They will send you the permit in the mail. In about two weeks.
