TDI will No Longer Allow the use of SIG P320 Pistols at their classes..

Drama Queens or justifiable out of an abundance of caution?

"After much discussion and review among our instructor cadre, the decision has been made that all variations of the Sig P320 pistol will no longer be permitted in any TDI classes. The safety of our students and staff is of the highest priority and is taken very seriously. In light of the growing number of instances where the P320 pistol has discharged without the trigger being pulled, we believe this decision to be in the best interest of our students and staff. Thank you.

Why isn't the military having any problems with the 320?

[#2]
There are some reports, at least one often cited incident involved a Marine's P320 which is claimed to have fired in the holster with the Manual Safety Engaged. These reports are most certainty few and far between compared to LEO incidents.

They are.  Turns out, .mil doesn't publicly publish all their reports.  FOI and other routes are causing the incident reports to start coming out now, and they aren't pretty.

The gun was never that great of a gun, the lines are wrong, the balance is wrong, it's too high, the ass isn't right.  That gun has always been... off.   And now, look at that, it's a POS that's gone off in whole lot of holsters.   Somehow, being half the price of the competition, so purchased for USArmy Contract since half the price of the competition - got translated into Best Choice Evah!  And I'll totally pay full price equal to all the competition price!

So, that hasn't really worked out so good.

Go see the 320 thread

Here you go, i'll make it easier.  This one post summarizes most of the topic.  It's a very very long post, but includes the military topic.  Amongst a huge number of posted and linked reports and coverage of P320 discharges.

The good news is your individual unit probably won't actually fail.   Probably.  We still have no guidance from Sig on that, but there is a way to test now if your unit is already failing.  Beware, the parts are so poorly designed and made, that doing the test could damage them if you do it often.  Because that's the P320.  i'll let you read up on it.

https://www.ar15.com/forums/General/SIG-The-P320-It-ends-today-/5-2782910/?page=54#i113174948

It does include some of the drop-discharge failures, which are a separate topic that SIG's high ethical standards still have them never officially confirming can happen.  But the real crux today is the holster discharge issue - which is also discussed at length.

While I have no explicit love for the 320, when someone asks for examples of .mil 320 failures, you can't link an entire thread as your source!

That's akin to saying "Just google it".

There have been a high rate of problems, though I don’t think there have been many ADs.

I don’t think most of them spend much cumulative time with a round in the pipe. Extremely few spend more than a day continuously with a round in the pipe.

Not quite.  The same shit gets repeatedly linked to in every thread b/c someone posts up who hasn't run into or understandably not kept up w/ the 87 page GD thread, and says, well .mil 320s aren't having any problems!  Or, I've carried a 320 for 5 years pointed at my nuts and I've fathered 3 children in the last half-decade!

And we get a new thread every time a PD or a school drops/bans the 320.  Given we hold the House, Senate, Presidency, and sometimes think we hold the Supreme Court at the moment, having a popular gun that has been widely trusted firing uncommanded into people's legs is the largest national problem the US gun community has at this point.

Yeah, I get that. It would be better to have a dedicated P320 thread in the Sig subforum under the pistol link.
All the good info stickied to the top and keeping the discussion cordial and on track.

That big P320 thread is ruined and its just a troll thread at this point unless the OP just posts all the good info in the first post.
People might actually read that thread and see all the good and informative info if it wasn't buried under people spamming "did it end yet" every other post intermixed with the 10 memes repeatedly posted every page.
That 87 page P320 thread is 2 pages of good info and 85 pages of trolls, just people bashing on Sig because they think they are funny or people just straight up being stupid. And thats how all the other P320 threads that are made turn into. Look at the names in those threads, its the same people over and over spamming the same stupid shit over and over. I don't even bother clicking P320 threads in GD because I knows its just the same people posting the same drivel. GD being GD

Sorry to offend.  I care about safety.  In this thread we had at least 2 people not familiar with the dangerous safety aspects of the P320 that have now been confirmed and no longer just hearsay.   The fact you are trying to shame people into not giving safety updates that are apparently pretty relevant  isn't a good look.

Pointing out P320's problems is the only time I've gotten a warning here , combined with your very reply  - sums up a portion of Sig P320 owners

GD being GD

The important summary post in the big 320 thread is on page 54.

But it's the same as any other 87 page GD thread.  Sadly, the Tech thread is less informative, and of lesser caliber than the GD thread.  Hopefully this Tech thread can be different.

My repeated suggestion for a P320 forum is mostly just a humorous dig @TheBeerSlayer who is policing the big GD thread, and other GD threads that pop up.

I don't think anyone's being drama queens at all.

I wouldn't trust it.

If I were forced to carry one for my job I'd strongly consider carrying it with an empty chamber.

There is some odd stuff going on in that gun.  Never seen anyone else use a leaf spring for a firing pin block spring.  Everyone else uses a coil.  That's weird.  I'm not sure if that's where the problem is but I believe there is some problem.

P320 has some issues, I believe we will see a P320A1 soon or SIG America goes bankrupt.

With millions on the market it will be an expensive fix.

These issues are overblown. I used to hear about the "extra dangerous Glock" that goes full auto for no reason back in the mid 90s. Glock is the best selling 9MM in the US today. I'm not saying that there not problems with the 320's but it is a few pistols out of tens or hundreds of thousands of 320's produced.

How do you know which of the pistols are the ones prone to this issue ? You don't, which is the problem.

That doesn't fix the issue.  The M17/M18/320 manual safety only locks the trigger.  It doesn't lock the sear, and it doesn't lock the striker block safety - which is the part that is INOP on an unknown percentage of SIG P320s, including apparently the one that went off in Japan in a holster, and some of the Marine Corps M17s.  No working striker safety, you're walking around w/ a cocked & unlocked 1911 w/ the grip safety pinned & no Series 80 drop safety - how much do you trust a Indian MIM sear?

And Glock responded by immediately fixing the issue. SIG has denied there's a problem and calls any criticism grifting and anti-gun.

Kind of a difference there.

There is a guy on YouTube who has posted how to test for potential issues. He has shown it can happen. He is honest and doesn't know why. He used his and a friends. His did it and the friends did not.

But for any naysayers in this thread. The 320 design is flawed. No way around it. Even if it's just 1 out of a 1000, that's a bad design. Sig is denying and looking like a fool, along with everyone sticking their fingers in their ears.

The military does have issues. Including UD's. There were people posting in one of the threads who are members here who knew or or knew of people who got in trouble for the UD's before all of this came to light.

The P320 has been plagued with issue dating back to when it was a competitor in the Armys modular handgun system test.  Despite the glock and FN pistols outpreforming the sig, the MHS was cancled before the final phase of testing was complete and award to sig based on cost, ability to address concerns at a later date, AND solider feedback at Benning or Brag(forget which one)

fast forward to the first few years and the gararnd thumb drop test video came out and caused a shit show.  Sig address this via upgrade, not a recall and for the most part it was quite for a couple years.

Then we start getting accounts and videos of pistols going off in holsters, but because of the modular nature and vast array of configurations, are hard to access if there is an issue or was this user induced at some level.

So here we are almost 12 years later and we are still getting videos of reports 320's having issues and injuring their users. Users of other sig products like the 365 or 226 do not appear to be having these issues. so should the 320 be pulled.  I believe so.  At least until Sig can articulate why we are here about these incidents with the modular 320 but not the modular 365.

the problem could be overstated, but in terms of running a training buisness and having to carry insurance, I don't think its worth the risk.  I think I would probably keep a few glock 19's on hand for people that only have a 320 and sill want to take part in training.

Outside of a combat zone, military do not carry a chambered weapon, especially a pistol.  They might not even chamber a round in a pistol in a combat environment in the name of safety.  They will repeatedly chamber and unload the same cartridge in an M4 as they mount and dismount a vehicle.

Well....isn't that how all educational institutions are, ultimately?

I do get the point. Cross pollination would be better. It looks odd having instructors with their ONLY creds are from that school. It could be a bit like inbreeding.

I went to several TDI courses back in the 90s and early 00s. Their instructors were very good and came from a variety of experienced backgrounds.

I don't know what the current quality of instruction is.
