I now have Patent Pending status on my gun design.  The upper is now caliber universal. .380, 9mm, 10mm, .40, ,45acp, .357 sig, etc. Since it is a bolt action and neither the upper nor lower are compatible with any other AR variant upper or lower, I'm going to shoot for the ATF considering the upper to be the firearm, and not the lower. The lowers will come in large frame glock mag and small frame glock mag pattern. For the .380 conversion, I will probably use a magwell insert (currently 3d printing a prototype of one) but I may design a glock 42 mag specific lower; depending on demand. I have completely revamped the design. It will take standard blowback AR barrels, pic rails and free float foregrips, pistol grips, picatinny rail mounted stocks and arm braces, whatever AR safety you want, standard AR hammers, (the trigger is a modified milspec trigger), all springs are from an AR15, as are all detents and takedown pins. This gun will take glock mags in corresponding calibers to the lower and bolt/ barrel combo. It will take 5/16x24 threaded bolt knobs as well. For caliber conversions: the barrel and bolt body must be changed. The lower must also be changed if you are going from large frame glock mag to small frame, or vice versa. (9mm to .45acp for instance)         As you can see on the bolt assembly, the bolt handle as far forward as the design allows for. The locking lug assembly rotates free of the main bolt body, and is affixed to the bolt body with a pivot pin that is held into place with a crosspin. There is a large primary locking lug, and a smaller redundant locking lug at the base of the bolt handle. I will pressure test this system way beyond pistol caliber pressures. Probably with 5.56.     In these two images you can see the size comparison between the primary locking lug of my design compared to the locking lug on a partially complete remington 700 pattern bolt. The primary lug on my design is larger than one of the lugs on the remmy 700 bolt.   There is a redundant locking lug at the base of the bolt handle. The locking lug section of the bolt, primary locking lug, redundant locking lug, and bolt handle will all be machined from a single piece of steel.    The next two images show the slot and recess in the upper that the primary locking lug locks into. Bear in mind, the upper will be machined from a solid piece of steel. Probably 4150 chromoly.   There is a safety of my design that is in the lower, that will not allow the trigger to be pulled unless the bolt is locked into battery. It is a cassette that is inserted into the lower behind the trigger and held in with a third trigger pin. There is a camming surface on the bottom of the bolt locking lug that actuates a plunger that sticks out from the top of the battery safety cassette. In one of the above images, you can see the top of the cassette safety and the top of the plunger sticking out from the top of it. Ok, Ill put my flame suit on now  |

I was thinking of making a one of a kind.....using a PCC lower and just a simple tube design and modified AR bolt/barrel extension on a 9mm barrel.... this was last night as I was getting ready for bed... I want a 9mm glock mag bolt gun... when suppressed ultimate quiet short ranged plinker/varmint/yard gun... |

WOW! Awesome, congrats! So many questions, answer what you can, no worries if you can't. Did a large (or even small) firearm related company jump in to assist (funds/engineering) or did funds come from outside the industry. It has an upper and lower, not AR compatible- are they loosely based on the AR platform. What about your is patentable (if you can share), there are many different bolt guns, some also using/based on an AR upper/lower. Your double lug bolt handle lock-up to me might be new. Is it the barrel attachment method, interchangeability? It is a good looking rifle and appears to have some actual design vs. some 'homebrewed' guns looking they were made from home depot sheet metal and hardware. Is it currently functional. How hard to change barrels. |

@bmarshall1 No funding or help from the industry. The engineering was 100% me. As to what all is patentable- I'm leaving that up the the patent attorneys. I threw the kitchen sink at it when writing the provisional patent. My out of battery safety design is unique. It is the heart of the design, and is necessary for safe operation of the gun. It is a cassette that is seperate from the lower; self contained. Barrel attachment is the same as any other AR variant. Takes standard barrel nuts. Making it quick change is something I will work on after the rest of the design is proven and solid. I put a LOT of effort into making it look and feel better. It currently cannot be fired. All of the recoil bearing parts are 3d printed plastic and cannot withstand anything more than a few rounds of .22lr. The firing pin channel is intentionally undersized, because it WOULD be fireable if a firing pin could fit and was installed. @BURN "Enough people have asked for one that a guy who posts on AR15.com had to go and make on for production." No idea what you are talking about.. @PatchesOHoolihan No plans on 5.7 as of yet, but that could happen in the future. Would be a good cartridge for this gun. |

(9mm to .45acp for instance) How about making a big opening in the lower so that it could hold inserts for multiple types of magazines, like the Ruger PC Carbine does. It'd be cheaper and easier to just swap an insert versus a whole lower (even if the upper is the serialized part). Does Ruger have a patent on magwell inserts? |

OP, as far as .380 magazines go, Glock 42 is a relatively new magazine w/ a small installed base. Glock 25/28 magazines would use the same magwell as the 17/19/26. Walther PP/PPK, Bersa Thunder, and Beretta 84 are probably your best bets if you want to try a different magwell for .380. https://www.ar15.com/forums/t_5_4/202843_Return-of-the-comprehensive-magazine-compatibility-thread.html ETA: check your @ list, OP. Just stumbled into the update, the tag notification didn’t work apparently for me. Anyhow- looks great! Using as many off the shelf parts as possible is the way to go. Looking forward to seeing how it progresses. Really would like a Glock mag, short barrel, brace, and suppressor. The .300 Ruger American in .300 BLK is a blast, but this idea would be so much better. Glad to see you are pushing things forward on it! |

@ENGCPT Its always more simple in your head. These companies are all trying to out-glock glock; and that isnt a long term viable business model. And it also stagnates the gun world. Kel-Tec and PSA are the only two large companies that actually put out new stuff regularly. The market is ripe for another company that does this. And being a gun nut and a mechanical nerd, I have a MUCH better feel for the market and what customers want than the share holders or board of directors of the large manufacturers. And it doesnt hurt that I actually want the types guns and accessories that I am going to design and sell. Capitalism is amazing if you are willing to put the work in. Dreams can come true. @arashi From what I understand about controlled round feed, my design doesnt technically meet the criteria; but is somewhere between a typical AR and controlled round feed. Part of my goals for the design was using as many commonly available components as possible. It uses AR extractors. And AR PCC firing pins, for that matter. @backbencher Welp. *orders glock 25 magazine* I had no idea those existed. The .380 conversion now uses glock 25 mags LOL I will redo the @ list later, thanks for that. @tReznr There are currently available barrels that meet that criteria. I intend to get one and design a barrel nut that matches the OD of an MP5SD suppressor once I have a firing prototype in hand. Then the currently available MP5SD cans will drop right on and you have a natively suppressed rifle. The hammer strike should be as loud as the muzzle report. |
