One of the reasons Bush doesn't make a big deal about the military issue is simple, his own record, is less then sterling. He cannot run on his military record of 30 years ago and expect to win. So he doesn't. Instead he focuses on the issues of the 21st century and what he is doing to address those. Kerry's war record of 30 years ago is equally unimportant since he's not the same man he was 30 years ago...forget about thirty years ago, Kerry isn't the same guy he was before the last opinion poll results came in.
I don't care about what either of them did 30 years ago so long as it wasn't criminal. What I'm interested in is how each has grown or failed to grow as a human being since then, and what their record of achievement is, their legislative records and their thinking on important issues.
George Bush admits he wasn't the best human being when he was young and that he had an alcohol problem that he has come to terms with. That shows real maturity. He has a good record as a commercial executive in the oil business taking risks with his own and other people's money and succeeding more than he failed. That's good. He was a very popular governor in Texas, and is well liked by those who take the time to get to know him rather than just spouting off. His religious faith is real, not just a ticket to be punched. His compassion for those less fortunate than him is real compassion, not Kerry's "noblesse oblige" (Those are Kerry's words, not mine and indicate a clear elitism to me.) Despite his honest concern and caring for the soldiers Bush has the moral courage to send them into harm's way anyhow despite the real impact the war has had on his popularity ratings, in fact there really isn't much indication in his presidency that he spends too much time worrying about opinion polls and popularity ratings. Bush does what he believes to be right and damn all the personal consequences....that right there tells me that he, not John Kerry, is the better leader and the better man, not just for the job at hand, but in general.
I'm voting George W. Bush, not because he's a saint, he isn't, not because I agree with all his ideas, I don't, but because he's a better man than John Kerry and a better leader.
