I did, years ago in a rundown shit hole restaurant in Aurora CO. Sketchy place the liberal sales guy I was with picked out. We were the only ones there. He ordered and it took them about an hour, a big plate with all kinds of shit came out. The food itself was alright, but I did not like the Spongy bread, I'll stick to Naan.

It was funny having these three Skinnies heating up water with an open flame while we ate. I will say the coffee was good. I was just afraid I was going to spend the day flying home in the bathroom.

This. All seemed to use the same seasoning. Not terrible, but it wasn't something I wanted to try again.

Tibs are a great way to introduce or reintroduce Ethiopian.  Basically Ethiopian fajitas.

Requesting or asking for lower heat is perfectly acceptable.

The Injera bread is a sourdough, so that has to be understood as to the taste.

The basics of ethiopian food
Ethiopian food is a unique and flavorful cuisine that has a rich history and cultural significance. Here are some of the basics of Ethiopian food:

Injera: Injera is a sourdough flatbread that is the staple food in Ethiopia. It is made from the flour of the teff grain and is slightly sour and spongy in texture. Injera is used as a utensil to scoop up other foods, and it is also used to wrap around other dishes.
Wats: Wats are stews or stews-like dishes that are made with a variety of ingredients, including meat, vegetables, and legumes. They are often served over injera and are a staple of Ethiopian cuisine.
Tibs: Tibs are stir-fried dishes made with meat, vegetables, and spices. They are often served over injera and are a popular snack or light meal.
Misir Wot: Misir Wot is a popular Ethiopian stew made with red lentils, onions, garlic, and spices. It is often served over injera and is a staple of Ethiopian cuisine.
Doro Wot: Doro Wot is a popular Ethiopian chicken stew made with chicken, onions, garlic, and spices. It is often served over injera and is a staple of Ethiopian cuisine.
Ethiopian coffee: Ethiopian coffee is a traditional coffee ceremony that involves roasting green coffee beans over an open flame, grinding them by hand, and brewing them in a clay pot called a jebena. The coffee is served with snacks such as popcorn or roasted barley.
Traditional ingredients: Some traditional ingredients used in Ethiopian cooking include:
Teff: a type of grain used to make injera
Berbere: a spice blend made with chili peppers, garlic, ginger, and other spices
Mitmita: a spice blend made with chili peppers, garlic, ginger, and other spices
Niter kibbeh: a type of clarified butter used in cooking
Ghee: a type of clarified butter used in cooking

Deployed to Djibouti.  Went down range to Ethiopia for a while.  We set up on an Ethiopian military base, which was a “military base” in the loosest sense of the word.  Ate a couple times at their chow hall until I went out back to piss on a bush and walked past the kitchen… The spongy injera bread that looks like tripe wasn’t my favorite either.  You had to use it to scoop the slop out of a communal bowl on your table.

I really like lamb tibs, no idea what the rest of their cuisine is like.

Of course the first time I was brought to an Ethiopian restaurant I was like "What, you guys have food? So are we talking U.N. aid porridge or what?!"

@cavvet Many in this thread likely don't realize Ethiopia is the largest Christian nation on the continent.  No small feat in the face of neverending religious warfare.

The problem most people actually have with trying Ethiopian food is not understanding what they are eating. They look at the food and have a preconceived notion about what it is going to taste like. When they eat it and the flavor is unexpected, it can create dislike.

Introducing people to Ethiopian properly requires a bit of an education before trying it. Set expectations and then when they try it, the new and different flavor will be a postive experience, not negative.

Had it once or twice.  Good food.  The owner had a bunch of old Haile Selassie stuff on the walls; I was tempted to buy him a wall-hanger Carcano with Ethiopian stamping.

I still have yet to find a cultural food genre that I won't eat.

Every regional or cultural food has ingredients that I don't like. Anything with liver, intestines, or other offal (except peruvian beef heart) is out.

Certain very sour flavors are out too.

Listen, I don’t include them either, but it’s polite to pretend the Italians are white, at least when they might see the conversation. And… Some of the Mexicans are legit master race. You ever see their TV? Goddamn. Some of it looks like Hitler won the war.

Used to be a place in DC called Meskerem. If you've eaten there, you'll remember it. Best Ethiopian food I've ever had outside of Addis.

Would go every year on my birthday because it was so good, I didn't want to get used to eating it. It was a treat every time.

Goddamn guys.

The Ethiopian famine was forty years ago.

Let’s try to spruce up your efforts to something topical for this millennia please.

Maybe like, “Ethiopian food? That tastes like ethnic cleansing in Tigray!”

If you must go old timey with your source material, maybe use something like, “Ethiopian food is too salty from all the Italian tears!”

Or, “I ordered a to go meal, and it was served in an ark!”

You could go a little inside baseball, and say, “after extensive DNA testing, it turned out my meal was kosher!”

If you wanted to be audience specific, you could say, “I ordered my Ethiopian meal from Royal Tiger as excellent and it wasn’t even fair!”

Just spitballing here, trying help you guys out a little with your material.

There is an authentic place in Portland that I've eaten at. Very spicy and a bunch of stews.

Typically heavy spices are used to cover for the poor quality ingredients.

Like Mexican tripe.

Don't care for it. Fortunately I can afford better food.
