Years ago I was having a few friends over to my new property to help me clean up the place. My GSD was outside. He met most of the guys who showed up with me present and was cool with everyone.

Well one dude showed up late that the dog didn’t know. He walked down the driveway unannounced while I was in the back yard. The dog sees a strange man walking down the driveway and does what he was bred to do. Being in a new unfamiliar home and with a newborn inside certainly heightened his protective instincts.

He ran up to “the intruder”, barking in his face and nipped him. Not breaking the skin, but certainly letting him know what was up.

Was this unacceptably aggressive? Yup. It was also 100% my fault. A) I failed fo control my dog and B) I failed to socialize him properly.

I apologized profusely, and thankfully my friend was cool about it.

With some added training and socialization that dog has been the best dog I’ve ever had in my life. The vet says he is the best behaved shepherd they have seen. He is amazing with my now 4 yo.

Significantly different I think.  Rural life has it's own challenges/benifits.  I've handled everything I ever needed to on my own minus 1.  Our long time lab I paid a doc to come to our house when he had bone cancer.  It was worth it to us even though money was extremely tight.

I didn't know the full story, killing livestock is a non starter in most rural settings.

I agree. I've put down many over the years. I've also held two while the vet put them down. Some can't tell the difference between doing the needful and doing a kindness.

Horrified?  Good lord people are getting so weak and pussified.

My wife is a vet and has euthanized plenty.  Would I shoot a pet? Probably not unless I had to.

Anything that chased livestock or looked at someone sideways got shot when I was younger.

I admit I am extremely reluctant to end the life of a pet. To assuage grievous pain, to end suffering, yes- to spare the life of another, yes. But to end a trusting animal’s life out of mere economy or convenience, never. I have made the difficult decision to euthanize a beloved pet many times over the years, and it has been heartbreaking each and every time. The least I could do was ensure that the last thing they heard was my heartbeat and assurance that they were, then and forever, loved. I have cried and grieved each time, as my animals have uniformly proven the greatest of companions. If in the eyes of any that makes me less masculine, then I honestly don’t care to have the approval of such shallow judges.

Reading some of the comments here only shows the lack and care for life itself. One poster said "If the animal cannot fulfill that function,
then it becomes a waste of resources that can be better used elsewhere..." As if life itself is viewed through the lens of a resource. This
is a very Satanic mindset. The same way you view animals is the same way the Satanists view you! Because you serve no purpose to them
they want you exterminated. Ironic it seems yet the Beauty of the Principle of Correspondence in effect. As long we we view animals and other life as
resources we will continue to take advantage of and exploit them... As long as we have this mindset we will continue to be exploited by the Satanists...

If I had, I would’ve been a shitty dog owner and shitty person. It would’ve crushed my wife just like it crushed Noem’s daughter. I had the introspection to realize I was the problem in that scenario, not the dog. Noem failed to have that introspection even years later in a memoir which says a lot.

Nobody, at least on arfcom, is saying Noem didn’t have a right to do what she did.

Based off the story she presented, which I’m sure is more favorable to her than the reality, still made her look irresponsible, emotional, and frankly cruel. I really don’t give a shit that she’s a Republican. Her politics doesn’t and shouldn’t factor into how I view her story.

Yup, sometimes shit needs to die. Lord knows I’ve done my share of the killing. But that stuff doesn’t include purpose built dog breeds doing what they are bred to do that the owner failed to control or train. You’re right to do it sure, but don’t act surprised when folks judge you for it either.

Horrified is not the word, and it depends.

Out hunting, it does not bother me at all.  I am feeding my family and honestly the animal had a better life than on a mega farm.

An animal I raised for food, normally no,  but maybe a time or two felt something.  Especially if I watched them grow up.

Still not horrified, but had a few nightmares about and shed a tear over, yes.  Shot a horse I had rescued about four months earlier.  It was my vets advice she could not get there and he was suffering.
That horse and I had built a short bond.  I’ll never forget looking at him in the face before I pulled the trigger.

However,  part of life’s is dealing with this stuff.  If you farm or live long enough you will end up dispatching one or two animals.
It’s just part of life, so no I am not horrified, but take no pleasure in putting animals down.

Years ago there was a guy at my department who was gonna go on vacation and was having trouble finding someone to watch his dogs. Someone at the station asked him if he found a dog sitter.

Everyone was dumbfounded. They thought he was joking. Then he’s like, “not joking, go look in the dumpster.”

Sure as shit 3 dead dogs in the dumpster.

I get it, it’s your family pet, it’s a hard pill to swallow to have to put it down, but the cattle on our farm are family pets, we raise them from birth and care for them, yet we put them down and then put them in our freezer. What’s the difference between the two?
View Quote

The difference is cows are livestock, and you are raising them to ultimately kill and eat. Suggesting they are the same is sort of ridiculous.

Our dog is a family companion whose job is to protect the family. Why would I kill him for trying to do his job? The liability of him biting the mailman is something I should’ve considered when I decided to buy a 100 lb working line GSD rather than a golden retriever.

This is my whole point. If you buy a dog bred to do a job then get upset and shoot the dog for “doing” what it was bred to do, you’re a shit person. It’s your job as the owner to ensure the dog does that job in a controlled manner.

Having a pet euthanized is not easy, we have been through that enough and dont want to think about it.

30 years ago, my son was 5 and we got him a kitten and we loved the kitten.  I was on a ladder in from of the house cleaning the gutters and when I stepped down, I stepped on the very small kitten and clearly did some significant damage and the small cat was flipping up and down and I knew it was in pain so I had to put it down.  That still pains me today and every time I ride over the area of the yard where it is buried, I think about the little kitten.

My grandmother and aunt lived out in the country and they always had stray cats hanging around.  When one would have babies my aunt would drown the babies in a bucket of water.  I remember, and this is going on 60 years ago, going to my aunts house and seeing a pile of dead kittens.  Back then, that was a way of life, today it is fucked up.

Goes to my point.  If you work in a remotely dangerous job, and someone would do that to their dogs, you simply cannot trust that person to watch your back.  They will get you killed or injured, guaranteed.

Those that do not understand that sometimes one has to make decisions that are based on the facts and not emotion are not living in the real world. When it becomes a matter of do I live or does the dog live I just like you will pick me every time. And if you don't understand that you have never been put in that spot. Those are the kind of problems that people in the real world face every day. Many people in this world chose to look the other way and pretend that the world is warm and fuzzy.

IDK about "horrified", but it sucks putting pets down.
I dread the day I have to put my cat down. He turns 17 next month and he is showing his age. We've had him since he was a kitten and he has special needs, so I'm glad we were able to give him such a good, long life, but that doesn't make it easier knowing his time is getting shorter.

ETA: There's also a giant difference between a "pet" and a "working animal". We don't have mice, our cat doesn't have a "job" other than to sit on our laps or lay in our bed. We were concerned he would be aggressive towards our son when he was born and we would have to do the needful but he has been remarkably nice to our son since day one.

Idk if I would describe it as horrific but putting down a pet is definitely one of the saddest things in life. I still have dreams about past pets and sometimes find myself shedding a tear thinking about them.

I definitely wouldn’t do it with a gun, I’d want to hold my girls as they pass.

If you have a conscience then anything you kill stays with you. That said, I also like to eat, protect my animals and in one occasion had to protect one group of my animals from another of my animals.
Hard choices suck and leave marks.
