Wow that first attempt must've really jarred the passengers. But the pilot nailed on the 2nd attempt.

Not a pilot, but if I still had a good down-and-locked and the tower told me nothing big had fallen off, I'd of been really tempted to fly the go-around with the gear still extended.

Why would you do that?

A go around at LAX in a 747 isn't what you're imagining.

ETA:  Every routine thing pilots do is practiced over and over, following the same (written) procedure every time.

Do they have an abbreviated beverage service on the go around?   Do the pax need to listen to the credit card offer again for extra miles or did that offer expire once the plan hit the tarmac?   I have so many questions.  And none are around the pilot’s landing.

After Monday seeing some dipshit from Daytona in his Harley vest put just a paper bag of hooters wings directly on the X-ray rollers at JAX, I have realized air travel is beyond fucked.  And yes they got stuck and fucked up tsa-pre for those behind me.

I was on a flight from Shuyak to Kodiak when the pilot did a violent touch and go.

There was a Cessna on the runway, either the FC in the tower was asleep or the Cessna pilot was totally oblivious.

Bad idea.

Once you bounce...especially if you did so with power on..the tendency is to slam the power to idle. Problem is you've bounced back up, the wheels have now spun up, power off - the spoilers will deploy, and that will cause a nose-up pitching moment that happens so quick it WILL cause a tailstrike before you can do anything about it.

Conversely, pouring the coals to it, controlling the pitch, even accepting a momentary touchdown, and going around to try it again is a much better option.

Go arounds are pushed as part of the safety culture.  Iow, unless everything is perfect on the approach, the Go Around is not just good judgement, it’s mandatory.
In addition, high traffic and high tempo at airports, means there are more go arounds.   It’s an amazing ballet, and unless everything goes exactly right, it’s toga for you.

Great decision making to go around. Somebody with an ego would have porpoised it down the runway, making a hard landing worse.

We have a bump in the runway here that makes a fun landing.
Sometimes it grows and sometimes it shrinks.

Runway has to be done often and the bump cut and repaved about every 5yrs or so.

I have flown with him before. He just upgraded to Captain. He's a nice guy but a little odd...

The 747-8 is longer than the 400. It's a bit more tricky to land, and it's very sensitive to power changes in the landing sequence. We have had a lot of problems at my outfit with hard landings in the -8.

You really have to develop a feel for it, and be proactive with the power.

I think the auto-spoliers require the power at idle even after being on the ground.
