The SFAR is a relatively new product, and I already knew the name was short for Small Frame Automatic Rifle, which is exactly what it is.

The SCAR has been around for 15 years, and I had to look it up. SCAR is "Special Operations Forces Combat Assault Rifle?"

As has been posted, it's a Trademark suit over the name "SFAR" looking too similar to "SCAR" and not on how the rifles look.

ETA: From lawsuit:

26. Notwithstanding FN’s well-known and established rights in the SCAR Mark,
Ruger has commenced use of the trademark “SFAR”—pronounced as the word “SFAR”
rather than an abbreviation of letters—in connection with directly competing firearms to
FN’s SCAR-branded firearms (referred to herein collectively as the “Infringing SFAR
Mark”).
27. Ruger’s intentional violations of FN’s rights in the SCAR Mark include
Ruger referring to its own firearms products as simply the “SFAR” with no reference to
the term “Ruger,” as shown for example in the image below.
28. Ruger also touts that it manufactures goods bearing the Infringing SFAR
Mark at its Mayodan, NC facility (as noted in the image above at bottom-right).
29. Third parties recognize and have pronounced the Infringing SFAR Mark as
“SFAR” (not “S-F-A-R,”), which is unsurprising as Ruger is not using hyphens when
promoting the Infringing SFAR Mark.
30. Moreover, FN understands that Ruger markets its Infringing SFAR Mark in
connection with the same firearms as FN that are very similar or nearly identical in size,
purpose, weight, feel, color, caliber, capacity, features, and even style to the firearms
marketed and sold by FN for nearly fifteen (15) years under the SCAR Mark.
31. Specifically, Ruger is selling firearms, including rifles chambered for the
.308 Winchester and 7.62 x 51mm cartridges, using the Infringing SFAR Mark in a manner
that is highly likely to cause confusion with FN’s SCAR Mark.

The concept that a customer for the FN SCAR could ever be confused and mistakenly purchase the Ruger SFAR is a damned stretch.

Eh... That GSG .22 was designed to look exactly like an iconic HK product. That one makes sense.

This FN lawsuit is just silly and frivolous.

What in the trailer park methbilly are they talking about?  Does ruger actually pronounce it as a single word, sfar?
I haven't heard anybody call it that.  People do say "scar", because sc is a common letter combination in english words.  Not really that many sf words, except where the s and f are in different syllables, or even different words joined together.  Like assfuckers.  As in, FN are acting like assfuckers.

FN is fucking trash. Sells you a threaded barrel gun and voids the warranty if you thread something to it. Discontinues their pistol models every few years and stops supporting them. Uses the lowest allowable warranty standard dictated by federal law. Now they sue for the dumbest fucking reason to ever exist?

I hope Ruger counter sues for ownership of the SCAR so it can be updated like it should have been 10 fucking years ago, and owned by guys who aren’t Biden dick cheese eating boot licking Belgian alcoholic phaggets who bend over backwards to not support their products.

Ehh... if you never served, and you never played with an M240B or something, I could see how one might think this.

Every single modern FN product I've ever played with has been somewhere between underwhelming and disappointing. The SCAR, the PS90, the FiveSeven, the 87 different polymer pistols...

I picked up a FNS cheap once upon a time, but the only non-AR15 FN product I'd be interested in owning is maybe a FNX-45T, and it would have to be at a major discount because the build quality doesn't come close to matching the price tag.

They're just fed and state trademark infringement and unfair competition claims.  Nothing about function, patents, trade secrets (AFAIK, I just skimmed).  Though I'm not a TM lawyer, it sounds similar to their previous suit against Ruger, complaining of Ruger calling their pistol a 57.  That suit got dismissed with prejudice.

Shrug, maybe a similar acronym is enough?  Maybe their TM counsel deserve sanctions at this point?  Couldn't say.
