Several times in the last couple of years my daughter has been sent home with a assignment of writing a letter to her teacher saying she was sorry for “insert bad behavior here”. She got another one today. Like in the past these have always been a whole classroom assignment.

When we have asked our daughter why she and the class were being punished. She has always told us “whoever” and “so & so” did “X”. And that she did nothing wrong. My wife even questioned a teacher about it last year to make sure that our daughter wasn’t BSing us.

My personal opinion is only the children misbehaving should be punished.

Anyway, What’s y’alls take on punishing the whole class for just a few kids bad behavior?

Kinda blew up for the D.I. in Full Metal Jacket!  Punishing many for the actions of the few is ridiculous!

I've found when they've told me it was "others" causing trouble that included "them".

I've only had a couple problems with the oldest, though.

I'd check with the teacher on every assignment, then tell the teacher that your child doesn't do "bad kid" assignments when she is in fact acting perfectly good.  Tell her you will substitute another positive reenforcement writing assignment for the punishment and if she has a problem with that, call the superintendant.  Skip the principal.

Why have kids feel they are always doing something wrong when in fact, they're behaving?  Its like telling them that no matter what they do, they'll always be a negative effect.

Call the teacher, all concerned, and ask if it is really your daughter's fault. Explain that you upgraded from the belt to the power cord because she is not acting better, but she was pleading so hard that you had some doubts about whether she is really still acting up.

I'd say we bring back spanking in schools and at home.  When I was in elementary school (grades k-2 in Taiwan), we would get spanked if we were caught for various infractions, such as talking during class, not turning in homework, bad grades on tests etc.  The teacher didn't spank the whole class, though, but rather those that actually commited the infraction, and in front of the whole class.  Of course, after being spanked by the teacher, you had to take a note home to be signed by the parents, which usually led to another spanking...  I got spanked all of 2 times before I realized that its just easier getting good grades and aceing tests (not to mention less painful ) and letting the less academically inclined students get the spanking.

I'm trying not to take your statement personal as I see you included the 1% clause in there, but both my wife and my mother are teachers.  Unless you have met 99% of the teachers in this country I would suggest you make statements based on actual facts and not personal opinions.

Edit: I'm not saying there aren't bad teachers out there, but the goods ones should't be group in with the few bad apples(no pun intended, well yeah, actually there was)

Why don't you write the letter for your daughter.

Dear Ms. Socially Enlightened Pussified Teacher,

I am so sorry that you chose this profession.  You obviously cannot handle the pressure.  It's not entirely your fault.  The public has accepted, nay demanded, that teachers stop corporal punishment of chldren for various infractions in school.  Nonetheless, it seems as though you should start looking for another job if you can't control a 12 year old child.

I send my child to school to learn, not to be punished for the acts of another child.  I am sorry because my daughter's 7 hours are wasted every day that they are spent in your classroom.  Well, that may not be entirely true.  Hopefully she will grow up to see you as an example of what is wrong with society, and it will help her to grow up into a responsible adult, who works hard to support stupid fucks like you.

Respectfully,
Diss_ipator

The idea of personal responsibility is rapidly fading in our society, and the school systems are the primary cause. I'd tell the teacher that I was teaching my child the concept of personal responsibility, and that she would not be accepting any responsibility for anothers bad behaviors. Accordingly, we would not expect others to take responsibility for her behavior.

Anyway, What’s y’alls take on punishing the whole class for just a few kids bad behavior?
It's complete, utter bulls*it, just another way to teach kids that they're not going to be held personally responsible for their actions.

When I was in middle school I got in a fight and went to the principle’s office.  I was given the choice between after school suspension or getting swats on the ass with a small board.  I took the board, because my parents would have found out about the suspension, but not the swats.  Never did have to write a letter about it.

Bad advice. They take anything like that seriously, even if you add "just kidding" at the end when you say it. Do you want Diss to be investigated by Child Protection Services?

Public school is almost completely bullshit now. The only times you really learn anything are if you take AP or IB classes in high school. Do you know what the biggest project of my 8th grade science class ended up being? Making a model of an atom with an AN greater than 80. Using the Bohr model, which was very outdated, having been replaced with the electron cloud model.
