Does dropping a pistol round into the chamber fully, and releasing the slide on that help reduce the amount of set back that can happen to a round?

Should damned-near ELIMINATE chance of setback.
But for many models of firearm the resulting complications aren't worth it - at the cost of raising the chance of a slam-fire if your firing pin spring is weak, or stressing your extractor as it is forced over the rim.

NORMAL operation of your pistol, chambering a round by stripping if from the clip is the best.
But if you routinely fiddle with it, loading and unloading the piece, you are best off keeping an eye on the round, or reloading the clip to replace the once-charged round.
And if you are doing this routinely with many brands of hollow-point ammunition, you'll very quickly notice that they are being deformed under the repeated impacts on the feed ramp.

Thanks. I've been careful about how hard I let the slide close on the round. Usually I follow it home, and if it has an external extractor, I push on it so it hops over the round easy. I'm not paranoid about it, its just I load and unload the pistol about 2-3 times a day. I don't CCW but it follows me wether its in a case, under my pillow, or in a drawer at work. I leave it full mag, empty chamber under the pillow, usually try to have one in the pipe when its in the glove box or center console, and unload it while its in a locked drawer at work (I'm away from my desk alot). So I tend to go through alot of ammo due to set back in a month.. Just hate wasting money by doing this practice. Hoping this proceedure will slow down the waste of rounds.
