Not really a disposable item. Computer equipment, except stuff with moving parts like fans and hard drives, seems to last forever. Most of that stuff is rated for 100,000 hours MTBF. Since you broke one, it's unlikely you'll ever break another one. I have a 10bT hub downstairs that has been running for almost 10 years. |

Excluding lightning, peeing on them, or other such 'events', they should last for 'almost' ever or until the components begin to degrade. This usually takes a minimum of 5-10 years, but it depends on the quality of the parts. Most failures occur within the first few days, and slowly taper off over the next 6 months. This is when most weak components, or parts susceptible to heat failure die. Its the nature of electronics. Something that may pass initial testing will fail most often during the beginning of its life. A failure occuring after 2 years is unusual. |
| I had a D-link for approxmimately 2 years but for the better part of the second year it would lose it's signal at random times. Sometimes it would happen about every 10 minutes. When I rearranged my computer desk I accidently plugged the wrong power supply into it and literally smoked it. I was actually glad cause I was looking for an excuse to get a new one! |

My SB 4200 crapped out after 2 years , the replacement SB 5100 is about a year old . When it gives up the ghost the cable company will replace it just like the first one . No questions asked . Its part of the contract . My Cable service even offers the Motorola SBG900 wireless for an extra $3 a month with the same replacement guarantee . My last Cable Provider used 3Com modems and they covered them as part of the contract also |
Dick! I remember as a kid growing up in LA in the 60's that every Long's Drugs had one of those testers. I used them several times to check tubes. I forgot about those things. |
