I just had to replace my Motorola SB4200 cable modem, it would power down itself and then reboot. I had it for 2 years. What is the life span of them? Who else had to relace thier's and how long did it work.
Thanks,
Gavino

I see brand new modems die in a week and I have a Toshiba that has been working for 5 years.

From my experience with cable modems the best are the surfboards, ambits, and toshibas. The worst seem to be the Linksys, DLinks, and RCAs.

My Motorola has been kicking ass for over 6 years.   I did have to have the power supply (just the plug) replaced though.

You need to replace the tubes. Open the back and pull them out, you can take them down to Radio Shack and have them tested.

Not really a disposable item.  Computer equipment, except stuff with moving parts like fans and hard drives, seems to last forever.  Most of that stuff is rated for 100,000 hours MTBF.

Since you broke one, it's unlikely you'll ever break another one.

I have a 10bT hub downstairs that has been running for almost 10 years.

They seem to be sensitive to lightning.  I've had two die, one lasted for a year, one for a couple years.

I just got mine replaced.  The last one lasted about 6 years.  It seemed, it was slowly going bad.

It got slower and finally wouldn't connect.

The cable company gave me a Toshiba PXC2600 modem.  It's supper fast and can't believe it.

My SB5100 got zapped by lightning.  It would still power up, the only problem is that the ethernet port is dead.  Under warranty, need to call the retailer and get the ball rolling on a replacement.

My first one was a Linksys that lasted 3 years until a recent storm killed it. Who knows how long it would have lasted if I would have had it surge protected. A D-Link has replaced it, and it hasn't died yet, so it might last a while as well.

Excluding lightning, peeing on them, or other such 'events', they should last for 'almost' ever or until the components begin to degrade. This usually takes a minimum of 5-10 years, but it depends on the quality of the parts.

Most failures occur within the first few days, and slowly taper off over the next 6 months. This is when most weak components, or parts susceptible to heat failure die. Its the nature of electronics. Something that may pass initial testing will fail most often during the beginning of its life.

A failure occuring after 2 years is unusual.

Charter gave me an RCA. lasted a few weeks and fell apart literally.

I had a D-link for approxmimately 2 years but for the better part of the second year it would lose it's signal at random times.  Sometimes it would happen about every 10 minutes.  When I rearranged my computer desk I accidently plugged the wrong power supply into it and literally smoked it.  I was actually glad cause I was looking for an excuse to get a new one!

My SB 4200 crapped out after 2 years , the replacement SB 5100 is about a year old .
When it gives up the ghost the cable company will replace it just like the first one  . No questions asked . Its part of the contract . My Cable service even offers the Motorola SBG900 wireless for an extra $3 a month with the same replacement guarantee .

My last Cable Provider used 3Com modems and they covered them as part of the contract also

Dick!

I remember as a kid growing up in LA in the 60's that every Long's Drugs had one of those testers. I used them several times to check tubes. I forgot about those things.

I lost one last summer to lightning also. There was a line at the local cable office the next day. Every person had a dead modem.

I rent mine from Comcast so if it gets zapped its on their dime to replace it rather than mine, $3/mo is worth it vs unknown numbers of replacements.

I can only dream of having a cable modem again...where I live there is no cable or DSL...hopefully wireless takes off in a big way and comes out by me .....soon
