I stand on my feet at my hospital clinical site 8 hours a day, and do a bit of walking around too.  I need some idea of some good tennis/athletic/walking type shoe that would be comfortable for long stretches of time.  I notice now that after a while the base of my toes and metatarsals (the metatarsophalangeal joints) are getting really sore and if I bend them they shoot fire throughout that area. - very painful.

Any recommendations on good shoes for extended standing?  Do those gel inserts help at all?

These shoes need to be preferably leather (easier to clean up blood, puke, and stuff off them).

Thanks!

Take a look at some Ecco's. Not cheap, but they wear well and are very comfortable for me.

The gel inserts have helped me some. My mother swears by Nikes for Nursing shoes, presumably because of the air.

GW, some comfortable dress shoes are are ecco.  I found a pair I can wear to court, and they weigh hardly nothing at all....good luck.

Edited:  They are expensive - think I paid 120?  but that's about right for dress shoes anyway.

Rockports are the most comfortable, best looking casual/dress shoe's I have ever worn.

I've heard that Knapps are pretty good.
Seems that most of the cops(jbts) round here wear em.

I second (third?) Eccos. They're not cheap, but for dress shoes they're phenomenally comfortable.

I FOURTH the ECCO's.  The best, most comfortable shoes ever!

I wonder if I can get the Eccos in white, leather, and looking like tennis shoes?

Another ECCO fan...
Right now though, I have on Clarks.
They're my second favorite for comfort.

+1 ...as soon as I wore through my last pair of Ecco shoes, I immediately went out and bought another pair exactly like them...kept the old ones to have them repaired when I get a chance.

I highly recommend New Balance shoes.

No, I am not a runner....and no, they are not just for running.

I'll leave the brand names to those with hard set opinions.  I would however like to point out a couple obvious things.

The two most important things for a shoe for being on your feet all day is arch support and heal impact absorbance.

Duty boots/low quarters like used in the MIL or LEOs  for example provide both.  You'll find shoes designed for waitresses and nurses to be of similar design which is a leather upper and thick rubber sole.

Tennis shoes are excellent walking shoes or running however standing in one place for extended periods I can think of no shoe worse but then I have never worn high heals.

Birkenstock makes very nice shoes...I wear the Footprints-Lawrence it looks great as a casual or dress shoe... LINK ...you can replace the foot-bed or have them rebuilt so they last many years.

A shoe should be the shape of your foot...

I love those shoes.  Comfy as all get out.  Best thing to ever come out of Denmark since Legos.
